Netflix Buys Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones Sundance Drama ‘Train Dreams’ (EXCLUSIVE)

The moving drama ‘Train Dreams,’ which follows the story of a logger who spends his life working on America’s railroads in solitude, has been acquired by Netflix. This film garnered much praise following its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, with Variety’s Peter Debruge describing it as a ‘modest monument.’ He was particularly impressed by its ability to document an aspect of history that seemed to have slipped through the cracks.

In “Train Dreams,” actors Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones take on leading roles. This movie is based on a novella from 2011, titled the same, written by Denis Johnson. Clint Bentley, who managed the 2021 drama “Jockey” that also debuted at Sundance, was the director for this film and co-wrote the script with Greg Kwedar. The duo have previously collaborated on the screenplay for “Sing Sing,” receiving an Oscar nomination. The cast is completed by Kerry Condon, William H. Macy, and Clifton Collins Jr., who were also part of “Jockey.

The production is handled by Marissa McMahon from Kamala Films, Ashley Schlaifer, Will Janowitz, Teddy Schwarzman, and Michael Heimler, who are all associated with Black Bear.

In addition to financing “Sing Sing,” Black Bear was also involved financially, which means that the production of “Train Dreams” further solidifies their connection with the filmmaking team.

The market at Sundance has been rather slow, but it’s picking up steam. A gruesome body horror film titled “Together,” starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie, was recently acquired by Neon for $17 million, and other films are generating interest among buyers. However, some independent studios appear cautious about investing heavily in films that, although artistically compelling, may not have broad commercial appeal, given the current struggles of the box office.

As a cinephile, I’ve got to say that “Train Dreams” seems like it might be an award-winning contender for me. In his critique, EbMaster’s Debruge mentioned that this film bears a striking resemblance to the masterful work of Terrence Malick.

In much the same way that ‘Days of Heaven’ captured the essence of the Texas Panhandle, Bentley brings the Pacific Northwest to life. However, while Malick’s influence is noticeable, Bentley has certainly crafted his unique language to narrate this particular story.

WME represented the filmmakers in the sale.
