Netflix Announces Action Thriller Sequel ‘City Hunter 2’

The streaming service has greenlit a sequel to a popular, but often overlooked, action movie from last year. They’re continuing to invest in action films, and have announced a release timeframe, director, and cast for the new project.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Tsukasa Hojo’s popular manga, which has sold over 50 million copies. Now, Netflix has brought the story to life in a 2024 live-action series. While the original manga takes place in the 1980s, this adaptation is set in the present day. The series centers on Ryo Saeba, played by Ryohei Suzuki, a skilled shooter, charming ladies’ man, and private investigator—known as a “sweeper”—who teams up with the sister of his deceased partner, Kaori Makimura (played by Misato Morita), to solve the mystery surrounding his death.

The action film City Hunter became a hit on Netflix, reaching the #1 spot on the Global Top 10 list for non-English films and appearing in the Top 10 in 32 countries. This success is likely due to the strong connection between the lead actors and the introduction of Ryo Saeba, a charming action hero. While Ryo is known for being flustered around women, he transforms into a highly skilled professional when working, showcasing incredible shooting accuracy, physical prowess, and a cool, calculated approach – all of which is perfectly demonstrated in the clip below.

The first City Hunter movie received mixed reviews – critics gave it a 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences liked it more, with an 80% score. Despite the differing opinions, Netflix believes the series has a future and has announced a sequel, City Hunter 2, which is scheduled to be released worldwide in 2027.

The first City Hunter movie was directed by Yūichi Satō, but Keiichiro Shiraki will take the director’s chair for the sequel, City Hunter 2. Netflix says Shiraki will bring fast-paced action and exciting sequences to the film. Jumpei Yamaoka wrote the screenplay, and Ryohei Suzuki and Misato Morita are reprising their roles. Suzuki thanked fans for watching the first movie and hinted at what to expect in the 2027 sequel.

We’re thrilled to be revisiting Tsukasa Hojo’s classic story, a series so many fans adore. Knowing how much it means to people, I’m putting all my energy and focus into making this film the best it can be.

The last movie showed how Ryo and Kaori first met. This new film is our most definitive City Hunter yet – the version we always felt the story deserved. We hope both longtime fans and new viewers will enjoy experiencing the heart of the original story.
