Neon Genesis Evangelion gets brand-new film for 30th anniversary

A new Neon Genesis Evangelion movie is confirmed for Eva Fest 2026, celebrating the series’ 30th anniversary. The film will feature new animation and be personally supervised by the original creator, Hideaki Anno.

The Evangelion 30th Anniversary Special Performance is a brand-new production made specifically for the anniversary celebration. It’s expected to be around 13 minutes long and will have its first public screening in Yokohama, Japan.

Hideaki Anno is the creative force behind the project, handling the planning, writing, and overall direction. Naoyuki Asano, known for his animation direction on Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, will direct the animation. Several key members of the original Evangelion team, including Kazuya Tsurumaki, Shinji Higuchi, and Ikki Todoroki, are also contributing as supervisors.

New Neon Genesis Evangelion film announced

The short film will be shown once each day at Eva Fest, from February 21st to 23rd, 2026. You’ll need a festival ticket to watch it.

Currently, very little is known about this new project. Details like the plot, characters, and where it takes place haven’t been shared. It’s also not connected to the previous Rebuild films. What we do know is it’s being made exclusively for this particular event, and there are no plans yet for it to be shown in theaters, on streaming services, or available for home viewing.

This short film marks the first new Evangelion animation released for public viewing since the 2021 film, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. It celebrates the 30th anniversary of the franchise.

Fans of the Evangelion series are excited about what’s coming next, and there’s another big announcement: Yuko Miyamura, the famous voice actress behind Asuka Langley Soryu, is becoming a VTuber with a new digital avatar.
