Neo Sora, the filmmaker and artist behind “Happyend,” has signed with Cinetic Media.

The decision was made following the release of “Happyend,” a film written and directed by Sora, which debuted at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. It subsequently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, and Busan International Film Festival, garnering favorable feedback at every venue. This coming-of-age tale takes place in a not-too-distant Japan, where a band of high school students struggle for a brighter tomorrow amidst a techno-fascist society driven by the dread of the next major earthquake.

Metrograph secured the North American rights to distribute the movie following its screening at Venice, with a planned theater release in 2025. Magnify is managing distribution for the rest of the globe. This film was brought to life by producers Albert Tholen, Aiko Masubuchi, Eric Nyari, Alex C. Lo, and Anthony Chen, and received backing from notable institutions such as Sundance Institute, Gotham Project Market, and Talents Tokyo.

Previously, Sora’s production titled “Ryuichi Sakamoto|Opus” had its debut at both the 2023 Venice Film Festival and the 2023 New York Film Festival. This film was distributed by Janus Films, and it has earned extensive critical acclaim with a perfect score of 100% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m fortunate to work with an impressive roster of talented filmmakers under the Cinetic Media umbrella. This includes visionaries like Richard Linklater, David Gordon Green, Todd Haynes, and many more – Killer Films, World of Wonder, Lana Wilson, Betsy West & Julie Cohen, Yance Ford, Matthew Heineman, Petra Costa, and Kevin Macdonald among them. Each brings their unique storytelling abilities to the big screen, making my role in their management both rewarding and inspiring.

Beyond its core functions, this management and media company offers a variety of additional services. These range from selling content, securing financing, marketing, and managing publicity, to corporate advisory. The latter role specifically involves representing and counseling media companies, brands, financiers, and publishers who are formulating and implementing entertainment strategies.

Cinetic Media will represent Sora across all media.
