NCIS Season 23 Quietly Confirms Timothy McGee’s Replacement

J. Claude Deering, who plays Curtis Hubley, is back for Season 23 of NCIS. His return suggests future storylines for Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) and the rest of the team, especially after the death of Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) in the show’s 500th episode. Curtis is a technical expert at NCIS headquarters who steps in for Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover) starting with Episode 15, and will work with the team.

NCIS, which first aired in 2003, has had a remarkable run. The show has evolved in recent seasons following Mark Harmon’s departure as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Now, NCIS is introducing a new director, marking another significant change for the series.

Timothy McGee Is Ready To Become NCIS Director In Season 23

With Mark Harmon’s departure, Timothy McGee is the logical choice to lead NCIS. He’s been part of the show since the beginning, initially working with Tony DiNozzo and Gibbs at the Norfolk office. Sean Murray officially joined the cast shortly after, establishing Tim as a new, trainee agent on the Major Case Response Team.

Tim McGee has become second-in-command at NCIS Headquarters, working directly under Supervisory Special Agent Alden Parker (Gary Cole). While Parker, a former FBI agent, is also capable of becoming the NCIS Director and is currently performing many of those duties, many viewers think McGee is the more obvious choice for the job, given his long history with the agency.

In recent seasons, CBS has shown that McGee is prepared for a promotion and more office work. He applied for the deputy director position in Season 22 of NCIS, but Gabrielle LaRoche (Seamus Deaver) was ultimately selected for the role. This happened after the previous team leader left, and McGee was initially considered for the position.

A key sign that Timothy McGee is prepared to take charge of NCIS actually comes from the previous director, Vance. In the 500th episode of NCIS, he subtly acknowledges Tim as his replacement, telling someone he’s interrogating (who is later revealed to be a key figure) that “McGee is destined to lead” while recounting the events surrounding his own demise.

NCIS Season 23 Points To Curtis Hubley As McGee’s Replacement In Episode 15

Although McGee hasn’t officially been a director or supervisor, he’s acted as NCIS director before. If Tim is promoted, someone will need to take his place, and Episode 15 of NCIS reintroduces Curtis Hubley, who could be that person – potentially succeeding McGee.

In the “Knick-Knack” episode, Curtis is back to help the team investigate a case on a naval ship while Kasie Hines attends a conference in Iceland. He demonstrates his skills in the lab, acknowledging that Kasie trained him, but has been hoping to become a probationary agent for quite some time.

Curtis has been a key player on the team, consistently eliminating major threats and proving himself to be a valuable member of MCRT. Similarly, Hubley, as a Cyber Ops Tech Operator, has a technical skillset like McGee’s, meaning he can continue the important technical work Tim contributed to their weekly cases – work that often determines whether or not a case is solved.

Curtis could step into the role previously held by Tim, becoming the team’s endearing, if slightly awkward, new member. This could be a good way to test how well Curtis fits in with the team and gently introduce the storyline of MCRT. Although NCIS has many choices to replace McGee, all signs currently point to Curtis Hubley.
