NCIS: Origins Showrunners Address If Mark Harmon’s Gibbs Will Ever Reunite With Lala

The creators of ‘NCIS: Origins,’ David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, have discussed whether Mark Harmon’s character, Gibbs, might reconnect with a past acquaintance in the current timeline. In 2024, the ‘NCIS’ universe grew with its first show set in the past. ‘NCIS: Origins’ focuses on Gibbs’ beginnings with NCIS – then known as NIS – and his work with Mike Franks’ team in the early 1990s.

CBS is building a team around Austin Stowell’s character, Gibbs, at Camp Pendleton, using both new and returning faces. These characters will play a role in shaping the leader he will eventually become. While Franks is important, Mariel Molino’s character, Lala, is arguably the most influential person in Gibbs’ life during this period. She’s not only a colleague but also Gibbs’ love interest in this prequel, which does create some continuity challenges. However, their developing relationship remains captivating.

Fans are eager to know if Gibbs and Lala will ever get back together on NCIS: Origins, and showrunners North and Monreal recently discussed the possibility with TVLine. However, they say it’s too soon to say anything definitive. When asked about when this might happen, they admitted their plans are flexible and they haven’t decided yet. You can find their complete statements below.

It’s not the right time to discuss how her storyline will conclude. We anticipated a significant week with this two-hour “NCIS” crossover, and initially considered starting our segment with a montage of Mark’s best moments. However, Gina and I decided it would be more impactful to revisit Gibbs after a four-year absence, and having a dog felt fitting for his character. Mark and I have often worked together on scenes involving dogs throughout our careers.

Gina Lucita Monreal believes Gibbs is a character who consistently tries to isolate himself, a pattern stemming from the loss of his wife and daughter. However, despite his efforts, he always seems to gravitate towards connection. Both in the original series and in “Origins,” we see him finding solace in a chosen family, which made David’s idea to give him a dog particularly insightful – it highlights that Gibbs isn’t truly meant to be alone.

The creators have explained that the song playing while Harmon’s Gibbs is on screen in the NCIS season 23 and NCIS crossover premiere isn’t a direct nod to the character Lala. Rather, it reflects Gibbs’ overall feelings about the passage of time.

North and Monreal exchanged a quick, uneasy look and chuckled nervously. “That was… a good plan,” North said. “Gina chose the music, so she can explain it.”

I really enjoy the song, and it feels very fitting for the show. The lyrics focus on the general passage of time, rather than a specific romance, which was intentional. We wanted it to reflect the 30 years that passed between the episodes and show Gibbs’s career progression. However, the idea of Lala is always present in the background of the story, especially in ‘Origins,’ so it’s possible the song connects to her as well. You never know what might happen.

Fans have long speculated that after Mark Harmon’s character, Gibbs, left NCIS in season 19, he rejoined his former love, Lala, in Alaska. This idea explained why he chose to stay away and not return to the Navy Yard. However, a scene in season 2, episode 5 of NCIS: Origins seems to disprove that theory. The flashforward shows Gibbs living alone in a self-built cabin, though he now has a dog as a companion.

It’s understandable that fans are eager for more information about Lala’s story, but the way the show’s creators are unfolding it is a smart move. If handled well, this storyline could keep viewers engaged for a long time, giving NCIS: Origins the opportunity to develop a strong, season-long plot alongside its regular investigations. It’s also possible they’re still figuring out exactly where her character is headed.

A key challenge for NCIS: Origins is explaining how Gibbs develops a relationship with Lala, considering the original series strongly implied he never moved on from his first wife, Shannon. The prequel shows him forming an emotional connection with Lala relatively soon after the deaths of Shannon and Kelly. The writers need to find a way to give this relationship a believable conclusion without contradicting the established, decades-long portrayal of Gibbs’s character.

New episodes of NCIS air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on CBS.
