If you’ve been playing Wordle daily since it came out in late 2021, you might be exactly who NBC is looking for! They’re currently testing a new game show based on the popular puzzle, and filming is taking place in the United Kingdom.
Savannah Guthrie, the host of NBC’s Today show and a well-known journalist, will be hosting the new show. It’s being produced by Jimmy Fallon’s Electric Hot Dog, Universal Television Alternative Studio, and The New York Times. Fallon, a self-proclaimed Wordle enthusiast who often plays the game on The Tonight Show, will also be an executive producer on the project.
The documentary explores how The New York Times bought Wordle, the popular daily word puzzle created in 2022 by Josh Wardle of Wales. Wordle remains incredibly popular, with 5.3 billion games played last year – a significant increase from 4.8 billion the year before. It’s become a global phenomenon, with even Pope Leo joining in!
Just because NBC is exploring a Wordle game show doesn’t guarantee it will actually happen. There are still steps that need to be completed, like getting final approval after the show is made, before it could air on NBC or Peacock.
CBS is already airing a game show similar to Wordle called Lingo, and it’s hosted by RuPaul Charles. The show first premiered in 2024 and has been popular enough to get renewed for more seasons. Interestingly, Lingo isn’t new – the original version actually started airing way back in the 1980s.
