As a lifelong basketball fan and a parent myself, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions watching this Charlotte Hornets incident unfold. On one hand, it’s heartwarming to see the team engaging with fans, especially a young boy who seemed genuinely excited about his gift. However, on the other hand, it’s disheartening to see that joy being snatched away so quickly.
An ardent supporter of the Charlotte Hornets basketball team became a web sensation when the team presented him with a PlayStation 5 during a live event, only to retract it seconds afterwards.
As Christmas approaches swiftly, it’s the time for sharing gifts. Children have penned their Christmas wish lists, households are brimming with presents, and there will undoubtedly be much festive merriment.
For certain individuals, all they desire is exactly what they’ve requested; no more, no less. Meanwhile, others might receive unanticipated presents that could bring joy to their day or potentially dampen the festivities.
Initially, a supporter of the Charlotte Hornets believed his dream had come true prematurely when the team apparently gave him a PlayStation 5. Yet, this joy was swiftly replaced by controversy and a stir online.
Charlotte Hornets apologize as viral fan has PS5 taken away
In the brief video, it’s clear that the Hornets supporter was there with the team’s mascot, Hugo, who had donned a Santa Claus costume. The announcer explained that he had wished for a PS5 after putting in effort at school throughout the year and also wanted to improve his jump shot using NBA 2K on it.
In the video that garnered more than 4 million views on X/Twitter, the team initially presented the PS5 to the fan. But once the recording stopped, they requested him to return the console.
In this video, StanUSMNT’s best friend and his nephew were invited on court for a special segment where they presented the boy with a PS5 in front of the cameras… however, off-camera, they secretly took it back and instead gave him a jersey. StanUSMNT then commented, “Take a bow Hornets, you really crushed the kid.
If you’re looking for an affordable sports organization, check out this video. My best friend and his nephew are featured in a special segment where they publicly gift the boy a PS5, only to secretly take it away off-camera and instead give him a jersey. Quite a twist, Hornets! You really got one over on that kid! 😂 Kudos to you for the masterful manipulation!

Additionally, the X user disclosed text messages sent by the child’s father. In his own words, he found it extremely uncomfortable when a team representative confiscated the gifts.
If someone is interested in learning more about the situation, here’s a summary: It appears they were attempting to put on a skit (which was unclear why), but there seems to have been a breakdown in communication. I find it puzzling when people give children gifts ahead of Christmas only to take them away later, as this can be confusing and misleading, like a clown juggling too many balls at once.

After the video gained a fair bit of traction online, the team addressed things and apologized.
From a devoted supporter here, I’ve got to admit that our performance in that skit left much to be desired, with some questionable decision-making and communication mistakes. To put it bluntly, we fumbled the ball and for that, we genuinely apologize. We’ve extended our heartfelt sympathies to the family involved, and we’re not just making amends, but striving to surpass expectations in setting things right.
The Hornets announced their plan to reward a fan with a PlayStation 5, along with a VIP pass for a future match.

Many spectators criticized the situation as “fake” and “cheesy,” demanding that the team rectify the issue. And indeed, they have done so, going above and beyond.
Why do they not inform children ahead of time when they plan to later take back the gifts they’ve given? It’s misleading to give them jerseys, only for the ones used on the court to matter. It’s as if they’re presenting a big gift but it’s actually not.
