NASA has addressed recent rumors suggesting that the unusual interstellar object 3I/ATLAS might be an alien spacecraft planning to attack Earth. They’ve clarified that this is not the case.
3I/ATLAS, discovered earlier this year, is just the third interstellar object-an object from outside our solar system-that scientists have ever confirmed. Unlike typical asteroids and comets which orbit the Sun, 3I/ATLAS came from far beyond and will eventually head back out into space.
The comet 3I/ATLAS has captured attention due to its exceptional brightness and fast spin, leading to speculation that it might actually be a man-made object. Unlike most comets which simply reflect the sun’s light, this comet seems to produce its own glow, prompting theories about an internal power source or engine.
Avi Loeb, an astrophysicist at Harvard, proposes that the object’s unusual movement could resemble that of an alien spacecraft. In a recent paper, he even suggested it might make a concealed move while hidden behind the sun in October, potentially changing its trajectory towards Earth. Loeb connects this possibility to the ‘Dark Forest’ theory, which posits that advanced alien civilizations might preemptively attack others to ensure their own survival.
Representative Anna Paulina Luna and Harvard Professor Avi Loeb are urging NASA to monitor a large object from outside our solar system as it approaches the sun on October 31st. They’re worried the object might release small probes headed towards Earth.

NASA shuts down 3I/ATLAS invasion fears
However, NASA officials say there’s no need to worry about aliens. They’ve been observing comet 3I/ATLAS since it was found and confirm it’s behaving like a typical, natural comet.
According to NASA’s lead scientist for small bodies, Tom Statler, the object behaves and appears remarkably like a comet. He stated, “It looks like a comet. It does comet things. It very, very strongly resembles, in just about every way, the comets that we know.”
This object has unique characteristics that set it apart from comets in our solar system, but it still acts like one. All the evidence strongly suggests it’s a naturally formed comet.
The comet recently became much brighter, which is typical when icy parts vaporize as it gets closer to the Sun, according to Statler. It won’t come close to Earth – its closest approach will be 170 million miles – but will pass by Venus, Mars, and Jupiter in the months ahead.
Rather than a threat, Statler called it an opportunity.
What makes this exciting is that we can now find comets that come from other stars – something we haven’t been able to do until recently. We’ve only found three of these interstellar comets so far, and they offer a unique opportunity to study the building blocks of planets around other suns.
Alien life still on the table
Despite NASA minimizing the significance of comet 3I/ATLAS, they are making remarkable progress in the search for evidence of past life on Mars.
Recent analysis of rock samples collected by the Perseverance rover on Mars has revealed intriguing leopard-spotted rocks that could contain evidence of past life. According to NASA’s Acting Administrator Sean Duffy, this discovery might be the strongest indication of life ever found on the planet.
Just days prior, a video went viral after being shown at a congressional hearing on unidentified flying objects. The video appeared to show a strange, spherical object somehow avoiding a Hellfire missile, leading to increased speculation about technology that surpasses anything humans currently possess.
NASA currently maintains that comet 3I/ATLAS is a naturally occurring phenomenon. However, with a combination of genuine discoveries and unusual observations, theories about extraterrestrial life continue to circulate.
