As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that the Assassin’s Creed franchise never ceases to amaze me with its innovative characters and immersive storylines. The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows has caught my eye, not just because of the stunning graphics or the intriguing setting, but due to the unique dynamic between Yasuke and Naoe.
As a fan, I must say that the two main characters in Assassin’s Creed Shadows present a striking difference. I, for one, am as sturdy as a fortress, wielding weapons galore and boasting immense power – much like Yasuke, the samurai. However, Naoe, the shinobi, is all about stealth and swiftness, moving with such speed that she could give Naruto a run for his money, quite literally, given her ability to perform the Naruto run, a feat made iconic by the manga and anime of the same name.
According to creative director Jonathan Dumont (confirmed to EW), the character Naoe is capable of mimicking the posture that Naruto adopts during his swift runs, where he leans forward and bends his arms back. Yet, Dumont did not go as far as referring to it explicitly as a ‘Naruto run’.
Dumont remarked that there’s a playful rooftop chase scene,” he added, hinting at something more. He continued to disclose details about Naoe’s history and how she unknowingly connects to the Assassin Brotherhood through her father at the start of the game, due to her family ties.
According to Dumont, Naoe had been sheltered from worldly events by her father until it all suddenly collapses. This plunges her into war, a realm she is unfamiliar with. Her father has trained her as a shinobi, but she knows little about her mother who’s been absent. In Japanese wisdom, “A frog in a well knows nothing of the ocean.” Naoe is thrust into the larger world and will discover that she’s not merely a shinobi, but possibly connected to a unique lineage or at least harboring some secret about a different type of shinobi. They are Assassins, so she shares some connection with them.
In a recent reveal, Dumont unveiled Shadows’ Canon Mode, allowing the game to make key story decisions for you, such as whom to romance. However, players can still choose to make their own choices. Ubisoft hinted that Shadows will bring a fresh take on the modern-day storyline. Additionally, developers have provided insights into how combat functions in Shadows. Leaks online suggest details about the game’s battle pass, and Ubisoft confirmed that rewards found in the Animus Hub are free.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will hit PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 14, 2025.
