Following recent financial difficulties that have led to Nacon nearing bankruptcy, the company is now attempting to sell one of its game development studios, Spiders. French news outlet Origami reports that the studio, known for games like GreedFall: The Dying World, has been informed that potential buyers are being sought.
Selling Spiders would conclude their more than five-year relationship with Nacon. Nacon initially bought the studio in 2019, soon after the first GreedFall game came out. Reports also show that Spiders was working on another game, internally called Dark, but it was cancelled in June 2025. Details about Dark haven’t been shared, except that it was planned to be based on an existing license.
Spiders, the studio behind GreedFall: The Dying World, has reportedly begun working on a new game shortly after releasing the 1.0 update. While described as a promising project, some within Nacon believe it was mainly created to keep staff occupied as the company considers a potential sale.
People have tried to convince the studio it won’t be closed, but those efforts haven’t been very successful. One developer said it seems like management has already lost hope.
Nacon has confirmed that both the company itself and its tech division, Nacon Tech, are participating in the sale, alongside the game developer Spiders.
Following recent financial difficulties at Nacon, the French video game workers’ union has strongly criticized the company’s management. They accuse leaders of undervaluing game development, claiming this has led to deliberate harm and mismanagement of its studios.
The union stated that years of poor management and a lack of clear strategy at both the group and company levels have prevented studios from updating, streamlining, and growing. Despite spending tens of millions of euros – funds that should have secured the studios’ financial health and employee job security – Nacon is now reporting a loss.
As a long-time fan, it’s really worrying to see how Nacon is trying to fix things. Slashing jobs by freezing hiring and raises just isn’t a real solution, and honestly, all this talk about ‘AI’ feels like a quick fix they’re pushing on everyone without a clear plan. It’s not going to magically fix their finances. What’s even more frustrating is that over the last few years, things at the studios have been getting worse, and it feels like they’ve been deliberately creating new studios to undermine the existing ones – all to cut staff, and it’s just backfiring and making everything worse.
The union is asking for Nacon’s leadership to be replaced and is pushing for improvements to the workplace. Specifically, they want updated development tools and procedures, and a plan to address the high rate of employees leaving the company.
Last month, Nacon announced it was facing bankruptcy after its main owner, Bigben Interactive, couldn’t fully repay a loan. The company asked for a quick and comprehensive financial overhaul, going beyond just a standard debt restructuring process managed by a court.
Nacon, a French video game publisher, is looking to sell Spiders, a Parisian game development studio it acquired in 2019. This announcement came just days after multiple requests for receivership within the Nacon group, and employees at Spiders have been informed that a sale process is about to begin.
