Netflix is broadening its collection of Japanese animations by introducing “My Melody & Kuromi”, a fresh stop-motion series starring Sanrio’s cherished figures, which will premiere worldwide in July.

The show highlights two characters: My Melody, who first appeared in 1975 and remains adored by numerous fans, and Kuromi, introduced as My Melody’s self-declared rival in 2005. My Melody is a friendly, upbeat girl with a strong affection for her younger brother and a fondness for baking cookies with her mother. Despite appearing mischievous, Kuromi is truly feminine and managed to secure a spot among the Top 3 Sanrio characters in the 2024 ranking.

As a dedicated cinema lover, I can’t hide my excitement as the director of “Pui Pui Molcar”, Tomoki Misato, takes the helm for this highly anticipated project. In a year that signifies the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi, this is truly a significant moment!

This monumental project has ignited a spark within our team, encouraging us to embrace challenges and innovate with stop-motion animation. I eagerly look forward to sharing this exhilarating tale set in our meticulously crafted Mariland, filled with heart-pounding action that pushes the boundaries of stop-motion, and, needless to say, the adorable and lively characters we’ve all grown to love.

This stop-motion animated series, titled “Having My Melody,” is the inaugural venture by Toruku, a division of WIT Studio. The script was penned during the pandemic by esteemed playwright Shuko Nemoto. In an interview, Nemoto expressed that writing dialogues for characters like Melody and Kuromi was particularly gratifying. “It felt like a reward as a writer,” she said. Due to the pandemic, she couldn’t meet with director Misato or the producers in person, but they collaborated remotely each week. The project is a testament to their shared love for the My Melody universe, cherished by people of all ages. Nemoto believes that both adults and children will find scenes and lines they particularly enjoy.

This series will be part of Netflix’s 2025 Japanese collection, joining titles like “Bullet Train Explosion,” “The Last Samurai Standing,” and the third season of “Alice in Borderland.
