Did any of the overlooked films or unexpected nominations for the 2026 Oscars bother you, especially if they involved movies you really wanted to succeed? It’s probably best not to get too emotionally attached to the Oscars—they’re known for surprising results every year—but it’s hard to stay detached when there’s so much buzz.
I was really disappointed when Sorry, Baby wasn’t recognized at the Academy Awards, especially because everyone was talking about Eva Victor and her chances – Julia Roberts even mentioned her at the Golden Globes, which was a highlight for me. Interestingly, I seemed more surprised and pleased by F1‘s Best Picture nomination than a lot of other people in the film industry.
Let me tell you, 2025 was a fantastic year for film. It was so competitive that, naturally, some truly deserving actors and movies were left out of the Academy Awards. Honestly, a lot of those snubs wouldn’t have felt so bad if those films were going up against the nominees from the last few years – the competition was that strong. But the biggest frustration, as usual, came with the Best Actor nominations. It seems like every year, someone amazing gets overlooked, and this year continued that disappointing trend.
Jesse Plemons Has Not Received An Oscar Nomination For Best Actor
As a huge movie fan, I’m already predicting Timothée Chalamet will take home the Best Actor Oscar in 2026. He absolutely blew me away in Marty Supreme – it’s easily the best work I’ve seen from him, and he really knew how to get people talking about the film! That said, it won’t be a walk in the park. Seriously talented actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, Michael B. Jordan, and Wagner Moura are all in the running, and they’re going to make him work for it.
Despite a very strong list of nominees, it feels like someone deserving has been overlooked. Jesse Plemons delivers a crucial performance as a conspiracy theorist in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, which received four nominations, including nods for both lead actors. His contribution is just as vital to the film as Emma Stone’s.
What makes Bugonia so disturbing is the calm, collected way Plemons’ character slowly unravels, a transformation brilliantly portrayed by the actor. The slightly awkward connection he shares with his co-star, Stone, also adds to the strange humor in their conversations. Ultimately, Plemons convincingly embodies the mindset of a villain.
Jesse Plemons Gave A Career-Best Performance In Bugonia
It’s hard to pick Jesse Plemons’ best performance – he’s consistently amazing – but his leading role in Lanthimos’ newest film is definitely a standout. He’s particularly impressive at portraying a character who seems calm on the surface but is clearly struggling with intense emotions. His work in Bugonia is genuinely frightening.
If Jesse Plemons receives a Best Actor Oscar nomination, it would go against a long-standing pattern in the Academy Awards. Though nuanced, even unlikeable characters have been recognized recently, no actor has ever won the award for playing a purely villainous role. Plemons’ portrayal of a driven, capable man with little regard for morality seemed poised to change that.
Jesse Plemons Was Nominated By Other Major Award Shows
While Timothée Chalamet was the clear frontrunner, it’s surprising Jesse Plemons wasn’t even nominated for Best Actor. This awards season was Plemons’ strongest yet, and despite the other nominees having more visible campaigns, many expected him to at least receive a nomination.
Jesse Plemons recently received a BAFTA nomination for his work in Bugonia, following a Golden Globe nomination. He’s also been nominated for an Actor Award in 2026. Given this consistent recognition at major awards shows, and Bugonia‘s many Oscar nominations, his omission from the Best Actor category at the Academy Awards is especially surprising.
Plemons Has Been A Dependable Actor In Both TV And Movies
You know, watching Jesse Plemons always brings Roger Ebert’s words about Val Kilmer to mind. I truly think Plemons is one of the most underrated actors working today. In the past twelve years, I honestly can’t recall a single performance of his that wasn’t fantastic. Ever since his days on Breaking Bad, he’s consistently shown just how incredibly versatile he is.
I often think of Jesse Plemons when I consider outstanding supporting actor performances in recent films. It’s been wonderful to watch him grow from impactful smaller TV roles into leading roles in movies, and I truly believe he deserves more appreciation from everyone in the film industry.
This Is Not The First Time Plemons Has Been Snubbed By The Oscars
Even with a lot of strong contenders for Best Actor at the 2026 Oscars, Jesse Plemons not being nominated is particularly frustrating. It highlights a trend: the Academy Awards haven’t often recognized his performances. Aside from his 2022 nomination for The Power of the Dog, he’s frequently been overlooked, even after winning Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
Jesse Plemons consistently receives rave reviews – everyone loves his work in Bugonia, and throughout his career. He’s a frequent winner and nominee at major award shows like the Emmys, Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards, and BAFTAs. Hopefully, the Academy Awards will recognize his talent soon.
