In response to the news that MultiVersus, the popular fighting game, is closing down this May, its creators at Player First Games have issued a statement. This statement not only addresses the shutdown but also condemns individuals who are making aggressive, threatening comments towards the game’s development team.
Huynh stated that fans are welcome to express their thoughts about MultiVersus, but they should not make threats. He expressed his sadness over the current state of the game, stating that no one desired this outcome and it wasn’t due to a lack of concern or hard work on the team’s part.
The developer expressed, “Although I’m disappointed by the results, I will always cherish the chance provided to us by Warner Bros. Games, as well as every member of Player First Games and WB Games teams. Additionally, I want to express my gratitude towards all IP holders for placing their trust in our studio with their beloved franchises and characters.” Hunyh further showed appreciation.
Huynh expressed gratitude to Player First Games’ developers and the fans who played MultiVersus, acknowledging their contributions of fan art, creative character suggestions, and personal tales that brought joy to his team each day. He apologized for not being able to include everyone’s favorite character in the game, but shared his enthusiasm for Aquaman and Lola, encouraging players to check them out.

As a fervent admirer, I’d like to share some fascinating insights Huynh provided about the selection process for characters in MultiVersus. Essentially, it boils down to a multifaceted approach that encompasses factors such as development timelines, heeding the voice of the community, collaborating with IP holders, and securing approvals. If there’s a lucrative cross-marketing opportunity to be seized, and most crucially, if the team feels passionately about bringing a character to life, then it makes the roster cut!
The Banana Guard character, hailing from Adventure Time, was born due to the developers’ excitement; they crafted the initial version of the character during a productive weekend session.
In moments when creativity and excitement ignite, we like to acknowledge it, and that’s why we developed Banana Guard. This creation didn’t overshadow another character; instead, it stemmed from the team’s enthusiasm about crafting this unique character. (Huynh)
In conclusion, Huynh expressed their wish for fans to appreciate Season 5, being the last one, and suggested that enthusiasts of MultiVersus channel their energy and resources towards other combat games, thereby fostering growth in the fighting game genre as a whole.
I appreciate your part in making this dream a temporary truth instead of the long-lasting one we desired. The future is uncertain for everyone, but I wanted to express my gratitude. It’s been a privilege to collaborate with the PFG team in serving our community and players,” Huynh expressed.
In 2022, MultiVersus – a game resembling Super Smash Bros., which is a platformer brawler, started its open beta phase. After a year, it was temporarily withdrawn. However, in the year 2024, it returned as a fully released version with fresh content. This game showcases characters hailing from different Warner Bros. franchises, such as DC Comics, Looney Tunes, and Cartoon Network.
According to our review of TopMob’s MultiVersus, we awarded it 8 out of 10 points, expressing that Warner Bros’ multiplayer brawler is a strong competitor vying for the title of platform fighting game king.
The popular free-to-play game, MultiVersus, hit a record high of over 150,000 simultaneous players on Steam recently, but its numbers have significantly decreased, with less than 700 active players reported in the last day. It’s important to note that MultiVersus can also be played on consoles like Xbox and PlayStation.
You can play the game starting from May, with an offline option for local multiplayer or competing against AI opponents. Regarding Player First Games, there’s currently no news about their future from Huynh. Since Warner Bros. Games owns the studio, they haven’t announced any upcoming projects nor do they have open positions listed on their career page.
Warner Bros. Games didn’t provide an explanation for shutting down MultiVersus. This news followed David Haddad, a longtime executive at Warner Bros. Games, announcing his departure from the company after over a decade. This decision came shortly after Warner Bros. revealed their strategy to concentrate solely on a limited number of highly profitable franchises within their gaming division, aiming to maximize profits.
MultiVersus has joined the list of ongoing games shutting down, as the industry experiences a contraction. Take a look at the gallery below for a peek at some other live-service games that Sony has recently shuttered or abandoned.
