Even though Kamala Khan doesn’t appear in the latest Marvel show, Iman Vellani, who played Ms. Marvel, has shared twelve compelling reasons why viewers should still tune in.
Disney+’s newest Marvel series is Wonder Man, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams and Ben Kingsley returning as Trevor Slattery. Simon has superpowers, but he has to hide them while trying to land the lead role in a superhero movie. Trevor, a fellow actor who previously appeared in Iron Man 3, All Hail the King, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, helps him out. Unlike some other Marvel shows, Wonder Man won’t feature Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel or many other familiar characters from the MCU.
Despite initial skepticism, Vellani shared a highly positive review of Wonder Man on Letterboxd, giving it four and a half out of five stars and urging others to watch. She then listed 12 reasons why people might enjoy it, highlighting how the series makes its superheroes relatable and avoids overwhelming viewers with complicated backstory. She emphasized that her reaction was genuine, stating that Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, had no influence on her opinion. You can find her complete list of reasons in her review below.
– If you like movies, watch Wonder Man.
– If you like movies about movies, watch Wonder Man.
– If you’re a Midnight Cowboy fan, watch Wonder Man.
– If you’ve seen every Marvel ever—or no Marvels at all—watch Wonder Man.
– If you prefer your superheroes human first and super second, watch Wonder Man.
– If you’re a lil sucker for a mentorship buddy-comedy, watch Wonder Man.
– If you forgot what sincerity looks like, watch Wonder Man.
– If you miss Ben Kingsley’s “Uh-merica” delivery, watch Wonder Man.
Look, if you just want a movie you can breathe through – something light and doesn’t demand you keep track of a million backstory details – then honestly, give Wonder Man a try. It’s not trying to overwhelm you, and that’s a really nice change of pace for me.
– If you appreciate some baller needle drops, watch Wonder Man.
If you enjoyed the earlier, more grounded, and intimate Marvel movies and feel like something’s been lacking recently, then Wonder Man is for you. It captures that same feeling.
If you enjoy seeing heartfelt people create things for an appreciative audience, you’ll love Wonder Man.
Destin Daniel Cretton’s response to the show aligns with the generally positive reception of Wonder Man. Critics and audiences alike have praised it, with an 89% critics’ score and 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many reviewers consider it one of Marvel’s strongest shows to date. The show’s success stems from its fresh take on the superhero genre. As Ben Gibbons of ScreenRant points out, the superhero elements aren’t the main focus, but rather a key part of what makes the show work, blending humor, mystery, and suspense. The story manages to stand on its own within the larger Marvel universe without being overshadowed by it.
Besides Trevor, Agent P. Cleary (Arian Moayed) is the only other character from previous Marvel Cinematic Universe projects appearing in Wonder Man. He was also in Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man: No Way Home, working for the Department of Damage Control in all three. However, you don’t need to know his backstory to enjoy Wonder Man.
We don’t yet know when Ms. Marvel or Simon Williams will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly with the future of Wonder Man season two still uncertain. Whether they appear in Avengers: Doomsday or another project, Iman Vellani continues to be a standout, not just as an actress, but because of her genuine passion for superheroes and good stories, which shines through in her work.
All Wonder Man episodes are now streaming on Disney+.
