Jimmy Donaldson, known as MrBeast on YouTube, has shared the reason he avoids taking selfies with fans: if he doesn’t take the photo himself, he fears it will lead to a bad experience for everyone involved when he’s out in public.
Running into a celebrity, athlete, musician, or someone you admire online is a special experience. While people used to ask for autographs to remember the moment, now it’s much more common to take a selfie with them.
Taking a quick photo is a great way to show friends and family you met someone you admire. But because it’s so fast, things don’t always go smoothly.
If celebrities are rushed, photos can easily come out blurry while you’re trying to take them. MrBeast has experienced this and has begun establishing guidelines to prevent it.
MrBeast has to take your selfie with him
On the Steve-O’s Wildride! Podcast, the popular YouTuber shared that he always has to take photos himself when meeting fans, because otherwise things quickly become chaotic.
He explained that if you agree to take someone’s photo and then let them pass their phone to a family member, you’ve essentially ruined the experience for everyone. He compared it to signaling a crowd, quickly attracting unwanted attention and disrupting the fun.
As a fan, I’ve noticed something about taking pictures with celebrities in public – it can quickly become a really awkward situation! If it takes too long to get the shot, things go downhill fast. Everyone immediately stops and stares, and then a line starts to form. Once that happens, it’s like everyone needs a picture just because others are getting one, and it becomes this whole stressful thing.

Donaldson explained that he’s been asked to leave stores in the past because fans would take a long time taking photos with him, which would then attract larger crowds.
He emphasized that they value their fans and don’t intend to disappoint anyone. He explained that if they don’t act decisively, things can quickly worsen, and while the reasons might be complex, people should trust their judgment.
MrBeast explained that he often takes thousands of photos with fans, almost like an assembly line, with his team helping to manage everything. However, if you want to meet him in public, you need to be quick – it’s first come, first served.
