MrBeast has responded to criticism from One Piece fans who accused him of faking his interest in anime to gain popularity. He’s defended his genuine enjoyment of Japanese animation.
The YouTuber faced backlash in December when he updated his X profile picture to a character from the anime One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy. Some fans criticized him for only recently showing interest in the series now that it’s become popular, calling him an “anime tourist.”
MrBeast responded to criticism by describing some of the One Piece fanbase as negative and stating that he’s actually watched a lot of anime, more than people might think.
The disagreement grew more intense on January 9th when accusations surfaced online, claiming MrBeast wasn’t genuinely interested in anime. These posts suggested he was only pretending to be a fan to advertise Netflix’s live-action ‘One Piece’ show.

MrBeast shares extensive list of anime he has seen
MrBeast responded to the accusations by sharing a handwritten list on X (formerly Twitter) of all the anime he’s seen.
He strongly protested, stating, “This is a false and damaging claim.” He acknowledged that people might think he’s strange or uncool, but insisted he’s a genuine anime fan, having watched a huge number of shows.
He stated the accusations had gone on long enough, declaring that “this disrespect needs to end,” and then quickly listed some titles he remembered.

He reiterated his previous statement about having seen all 700 episodes of Naruto. However, instead of ending the discussion, the post led to more criticism. Many users made fun of what they considered to be predictable or popular choices.
The discussion is happening again as Netflix gets ready to release the second season of its live-action One Piece show on March 2, 2026. The new season is expected to attract even more fans, and probably restart debates about what it truly means to be a dedicated anime or manga enthusiast – an ‘otaku’.
