Moviegoers are concerned about a new policy at a major theater chain that allows phone use during films.
Look, as a gamer and movie fan, I gotta say, using your phone during a movie in the theater is just the worst. Seriously, nobody wants a bright screen messing up their view when they’re trying to get into a good film, whether it’s a Marvel blockbuster or something up for an Oscar. It’s super distracting and ruins the experience for everyone.
Alamo Drafthouse is updating its policy in February to allow phone use, but there will be some restrictions.
I’m hearing about these new policies where you can order food right to your seat, and honestly, a lot of us fans are worried it’s going to be a huge mess. It sounds good in theory, but we’re not sure how well it’ll actually work!
Alamo Drafthouse is letting customers use their phones during movies
Variety reports that the Texas theater chain is introducing mobile ordering, replacing their traditional pen-and-paper system for servers.
Beginning in February, Alamo Drafthouse is rolling out a new way to order food and drinks. Moviegoers will be able to use their phones to see the menu, place orders anytime during the movie, and pay without needing to wait for a server.
As a movie fan, I’m really excited about this change Alamo is making! They said they’re doing it to avoid annoying interruptions like servers bringing the check right when something big is happening on screen. Basically, letting us order everything through our phones should make things faster and keep us totally focused on the movie – which is exactly what we want, right?
Despite this, Alamo Drafthouse still doesn’t allow phones during movies. Texting and using social media are prohibited, and employees are trained to recognize when someone is using their phone instead of looking at the ordering screen. Guests who are caught using their phones will be asked to leave.
The theater chain explained that its new, darkened auditorium setup is meant to reduce interruptions during movies, and early testing has shown positive results. Guests can also easily request help from staff using their phones if needed.
Despite the potential benefits, some customers and employees have voiced concerns about this idea.
“There’s no practical way in hell Alamo Drafthouse will be able to enforce this,” one said.
Someone else agreed, saying it was actually a good thing the theater didn’t allow phones.
A TikTok user named ‘justinlovesmovies,’ a former Alamo Drafthouse employee of over a year, advised people not to use the theater’s mobile ordering system, explaining that it reduces the chance for servers to receive tips.
Alamo assures customers that this change won’t result in any layoffs. Although the way hourly employees work will be different, the company confirms no jobs are being cut and everyone’s base pay will remain the same.
