As a gamer, I’ve always been impressed with Obsidian Entertainment – they really know how to make amazing open-world RPGs. But what really sets them apart is their characters. Seriously, they’re fantastic. If you’ve played The Outer Worlds, you know what I mean. That game is full of interesting people, with so much depth, that you genuinely connect with. They’re the kind of characters that stay with you long after you finish the game.
Before the launch of The Outer Worlds 2, we asked our followers on Instagram to share their favorite characters from the first game. It’s no surprise that many characters received a lot of love! We’ve compiled a list of the top three most popular characters, based on the votes. Let’s take a look back at these fan favorites as we eagerly anticipate meeting new characters in The Outer Worlds 2.
Parvati Holcomb

Parvati Holcomb is an early companion you’ll encounter in The Outer Worlds. She’s a kind and somewhat innocent mechanical engineer who works for Reed Tobson in Edgewater. She’s very passionate about her work and eagerly joins your crew after seeing and becoming fascinated with your ship, the Unreliable.
Parvati is often considered the most endearing member of the group, and it’s easy to see why. She’s genuinely kind, has a strong sense of right and wrong, and always focuses on the good in people, regardless of their background. Despite seeming simple, she makes a powerful impact as a calming and refreshing presence. Even in battle, she’s surprisingly sweet and avoids violence when possible. Her peaceful nature softens even the most hardened characters, like Vicar Max. Beyond her personality, many players connected with Parvati’s story of discovering her feelings for Junlei and grappling with her sexuality, making her a significant character for LGBTQ+ representation. Her honest and innocent portrayal of both naivety and queer experiences quickly made her a beloved companion.
Vicar Max

Maximilian DeSoto, known as Vicar Max, is a member of the Order of Scientific Inquiry who is determined to uncover the OSI’s secrets and the mysterious “Plan.” He’s willing to manipulate and even become violent to achieve his goals. While Max isn’t immediately likable – he’s arrogant and self-centered, and even complains about a book he asks you to find being in a language he can’t read – getting to know him reveals a more complex personality. Beneath the surface, he’s incredibly intelligent and genuinely tries to help, even if his approach can be a bit insensitive. He requires patience, but those who give him a chance will find a surprisingly nuanced character.
Max brings a fun, sarcastic energy to the group, and his silly comments during fights are especially amusing. While he’s skilled with a shotgun, his dramatic lines like “I smite you in the name of the law!” before attacking enemies are over-the-top and hilarious. Despite being a bit self-absorbed and irritating at times, Max is ultimately searching for inner peace, which leads to a fantastic character arc – many fans consider it one of the best in the series. Seeing him change from a cynical, edgy character to someone more peaceful and content is a rewarding experience, making his earlier annoying behavior worthwhile.
SAM

You’ll find SAM, nicknamed “Sanitation and Maintenance,” on the top floor of the Unreliable. He’s a cleaning robot that’s been upgraded to spray acid at enemies – a rather unusual way to “clean up” in a fight! What makes SAM so well-liked is that he’s surprisingly simple. Many characters in The Outer Worlds have complex stories, but SAM is just a robot dedicated to his job: cleaning is his life. His robotic, emotionless dialogue is actually quite funny and often provides a welcome bit of levity during more serious scenes.
SAM isn’t concerned with morality – he simply has to clean, even if it means eliminating enemies. He’s a refreshingly straightforward companion, so you don’t have to worry about complex choices when he’s around. He happily uses his stomp and acid spray to clear obstacles. When he’s not helping in battles, he’s busy tidying up the ship and playfully rejecting ADA’s advances, which is always entertaining. Ultimately, it’s SAM’s uncomplicated nature that makes him so endearing. In a game filled with important decisions, he’s a lighthearted friend whose only passion is getting rid of dirt. Got a tough stain? SAM’s your bot!
