I was really excited to see Lewis Tan, who was awesome in Mortal Kombat 2, say he’s hoping for a fun rivalry with the Street Fighter movie. It all started when Andrew Schulz playfully teased his sequel at the Game Awards, and now Lewis is responding with a good-natured challenge – I love it! It’s cool to see some friendly competition between these fighting game adaptations.
The first Mortal Kombat movie came out in 2021, during the height of the pandemic, and was available to watch in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time. The sequel will continue the story of Cole Young and his fellow fighters as they team up with Johnny Cage to protect Earth from the villain Shao Khan.
While the new Mortal Kombat movie is coming out this year, it’s not the only fighting game getting a big-screen adaptation. The Street Fighter movie from Capcom and Paramount is also on its way. At the Game Awards, Christian Schulz, who plays Dan Hibiki in Street Fighter, playfully teased Mortal Kombat 2, saying, “They just care about profits! We care about both money and the fans. Long live Street Fighter!”
Tan stated he’s eager to maintain a competitive spirit with the Street Fighter film, and he reacted sharply to Schulz’s critical comments.
Lewis Tan says Andrew Schulz is “obviously not a fighter, not even really an actor”
Tan responded to comments made by comedian Shulz at the Game Awards, stating that Shulz isn’t qualified to critique the franchise in question.
According to sources, Tan criticized Andrew Schulz, saying he shouldn’t be making critical comments given his lack of fighting or acting experience. He specifically pointed out that Schulz isn’t a fighter or a seasoned actor. Tan did, however, express admiration for Andrew Koji, who plays Ryu, praising him as a skilled martial artist.
The actor from Mortal Kombat 2 finds the ongoing competition between the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter series amusing. He’s noticed a lot of comparisons between the two this year and welcomes the rivalry, saying, ‘I love a good rivalry, so let’s go!’ He also mentioned that Mortal Kombat is scheduled to release before Street Fighter, noting, ‘We come out first. I think they’re in October.’
I thought the first Street Fighter trailer looked fantastic! I really dig the vibe they’re going for with it. But ultimately, we’ll have to see how it does in theaters – box office numbers will tell us who the real winner is.
