Johnny Cage is back, aiming to achieve a new high score for the Mortal Kombat series on Rotten Tomatoes.

After initial screenings leading up to its May 8th release, Mortal Kombat 2 has achieved the highest audience score of any movie in the Mortal Kombat series on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on over 500 verified reviews, the film currently boasts a 90% audience score – the best for any Mortal Kombat adaptation so far. This score may change as more people share their opinions over the weekend.

The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie has been better received by audiences than previous live-action versions. It currently has an 85% audience score, compared to 24% for Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997) and 58% for the 1995 Mortal Kombat film. Interestingly, the new movie also performs well against recent animated Mortal Kombat releases, like Scorpion’s Revenge (86%), Battle of the Realms (61%), and Snow Blind (87%).

Critically, Mortal Kombat 2 has achieved a new milestone for the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes. With a 68% score, it’s the highest-rated live-action Mortal Kombat movie ever, finally earning a “Fresh” rating. Previous live-action films received much lower scores, ranging from 4% to 55%. While impressive, it’s still behind the ratings of recent animated Mortal Kombat projects like Snow Blind (80%) and Scorpion’s Revenge (90%).

Critics and audiences are responding positively to Mortal Kombat 2, and it’s expected to do well in its opening weekend at the box office. Experts predict it will be the number one movie, potentially earning around $80 million worldwide, beating out The Devil Wears Prada 2. The film is also competing with Michael and new releases like The Sheep Detectives and the concert film Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D).

The sequel to Mortal Kombat brings back several familiar faces, including Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. New cast members joining the fight include Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Ana Thu Nguyen as Sindel.

In October 2025, news emerged that Warner Bros. is working on Mortal Kombat 3. The success of the first film, which has received fantastic reviews and strong audience reactions, is giving the project a boost. However, how well Mortal Kombat 2 performs at the box office will likely be the biggest factor in greenlighting the third installment. Currently, Mortal Kombat 2 is off to a promising start, with an $80 million budget, before facing competition from Disney’s The Mandalorian and Grogu over Memorial Day Weekend.
