A Reddit user recently figured out why some players were experiencing lower frame rates in the game. They discovered the game frequently checks how much downloadable content (DLC) you’ve purchased. Surprisingly, the more DLC you own, the less intensely the game checks, leading to smoother gameplay and higher frame rates.

A user on Reddit pointed out that performance problems seem to mostly affect people with older or mid-range processors, though even powerful computers can experience issues. Importantly, the player believes these problems aren’t intentional; it appears to be a bug in the game’s code that Capcom can likely fix. This means theories about Capcom deliberately limiting performance to encourage purchases aren’t accurate – it’s simply a technical issue.

The person who made this discovery has shared videos demonstrating a huge performance difference between the game with no expansions and the game with all expansions installed. Without any expansions, the game ran at about 20 to 25 frames per second in main areas. With all expansions, it consistently achieved over 80 frames per second.

The discovery was so surprising that even the well-respected Digital Foundry has requested footage from the user, suggesting they’ll be doing a more detailed analysis soon. However, many gamers are hoping Capcom will actually fix the problem.

Ugh, this is really frustrating as a player. Just when Monster Hunter Wilds was starting to get some love after TU4, things have taken a turn for the worse and everyone’s complaining again.
