Disney has created some excellent TV shows alongside its popular movies, thanks to franchises like Marvel and Star Wars. One often overlooked gem is a six-episode psychological thriller – a surprisingly welcome sequel to The Mummy that many fans will appreciate.
Disney has broadened the scope of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with shows on Disney+, allowing them to experiment with different types of stories. While many of these shows have been well-received by both critics and viewers, most have only lasted for a single season. One standout example is Moon Knight, which unexpectedly shares similarities with the film The Mummy and feels like a natural continuation of its themes.
Moon Knight Felt Like A Spiritual Successor To The Mummy
Marvel’s 2022 miniseries, Moon Knight, is part of the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Created by Jeremy Slater, the series features Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector, a man who experiences dissociative identity disorder. One of his other personalities is Steven Grant, a quiet British museum worker with a deep understanding of ancient Egypt.
I recently discovered the incredible backstory of Moon Knight! Apparently, Marc Spector was just a mercenary who nearly died when, out of nowhere, he became the earthly form of the Egyptian god Khonshu. Khonshu basically saved his life and, in return, gave him this amazing suit and a whole bunch of powers. It’s all so he could become a vigilante and get revenge on the bad guys – that’s how Moon Knight was born. It’s a seriously cool origin story!
In Moon Knight, Marc Spector and Steven Grant pursue Arthur Harrow, a fanatic cult leader connected to the Egyptian goddess Ammit and previously served as the avatar of Khonshu. The series also delves into Spector’s past, revealing the origins of his dissociative identity disorder (DID) and the history of his different personalities.
Moon Knight is a surprisingly complex and mature addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, tackling darker themes than many previous shows and films. Oscar Isaac delivers a fantastic performance as Marc Spector and his different personalities, and Ethan Hawke is compelling as the villain. What really sets the show apart is its clever use of Egyptian mythology, which adds depth, fascination, and originality to the MCU.
What makes Moon Knight feel like a modern take on The Mummy is its combination of exciting action and ancient Egyptian beliefs. Just like the 1999 film with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, Moon Knight blends thrilling adventures with Egyptian mythology, supernatural forces, and a central mystery for the characters to solve.
Moon Knight shares a similar adventurous spirit with The Mummy, but feels more mature, intricate, and focused on deeper themes. While the two stories aren’t connected, they fit together well and could realistically exist in the same world, enriching each other’s myths and supernatural aspects.
Moon Knight Was Better Than Any The Mummy Sequel (So Far)
I still remember when The Mummy came out in 1999! It was directed by Stephen Sommers, and even though critics were kind of split on it, everyone went to see it. Now, it’s become a real classic from the 90s, and it was so popular that it kicked off a whole series of movies! We got two sequels – The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor – which were awesome too.
While The Mummy Returns made good money at the box office, critics weren’t as impressed, finding it entertaining but weak in areas like plot and special effects. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor continued the box office success, but critics were even less enthusiastic, feeling the series had gone on for too long.
As a huge fan of the original The Mummy, I was really disappointed when the 2017 reboot didn’t take off – it was supposed to kickstart a whole new series of Universal Monster movies, but it just didn’t work. But, good news! They’re actually making another one now, with the original stars, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, coming back! It’s being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and it’s currently slated to hit theaters on May 19, 2028. I’m cautiously optimistic!
Even though they come from completely different worlds, Moon Knight is a stronger series than any of The Mummy’s sequels. It features well-developed characters, a story that’s richly connected to Egyptian mythology, and a great mix of action, emotional moments, and dark humor. Whether the next Mummy movie will surpass Moon Knight remains to be seen, but Moon Knight will likely remain the superior successor in spirit.
