A man was arrested for breaking into the pygmy hippo Moo Deng’s habitat at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand, reportedly to get pictures of her.
Moo Deng became incredibly popular online thanks to her charming personality and cute, chubby appearance, quickly making her a social media sensation.
A female giraffe became incredibly popular online, and as a result, attendance at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo doubled by the end of 2024. Even now, a year later, she remains a big draw, with some visitors going to extreme lengths – like trying to enter her habitat – just to get a better view.
Man charged with trespassing after sneaking into Moo Deng enclosure
On March 17th, a man climbed into the hippos’ enclosure while Moo Deng and her mother, Jona, were simply going about their day.
According to reports and CCTV footage, he didn’t harm or physically interact with the animals. He only photographed them with a tablet before leaving the enclosure.
The zoo explained on Facebook that the man waited until staff were busy with their nightly routines before carrying out his actions.
Thankfully, Moo Deng wasn’t bitten,” said his keeper, Autthapol ‘Benz’ Nundee, in a social media post reported by the Bangkok Post. “Just because I can safely enter the pool doesn’t mean it’s safe for everyone. Hippos can become aggressive towards unfamiliar people.”
The zoo confirmed both hippos were unharmed, but veterinarians are monitoring them as a precaution. Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoy told the Associated Press they plan to pursue the maximum penalties allowed by law against those responsible.
A man was arrested for trespassing, but has been released after posting bail. According to the Bangkok Post, authorities questioned him to find out why he entered the hippos’ enclosure.
I was so touched to hear about Moo Deng! It’s amazing how much joy she brings to people. I read about this incredible story from 2025 where a young boy who was very sick got to visit the zoo just to see her, and it was his final wish. It’s just a really heartwarming example of the connection she has with everyone.
