Popular YouTuber Charles White, known as MoistCr1tikal, was surprised to discover he’s been duplicated on Chinese social media. People are taking his videos, translating them into Mandarin, and even mimicking his voice and speaking style.
I’m a huge fan of MoistCr1tikal – he’s this content creator from Florida who’s hilarious! What really sets him apart is his super chill, monotone voice and the way he delivers jokes with a totally straight face. It’s a really unique style of humor that I love.
Everyone recognizes him by his distinctively deep voice, so the influencer was shocked when he discovered that fans in China were using artificial intelligence to translate his YouTube videos and make it sound like he was speaking flawless Chinese.
On February 6th, the YouTuber shared a video reacting to a surprising trend: an AI-generated clip made it sound like he was speaking Chinese in a flat, robotic tone. He showed the clip to demonstrate the technology’s capabilities.
Content creators are speaking fluent Chinese with AI ‘clones’
A user was reposting videos from popular creators on Bilibili, a Chinese video platform. While some videos had been translated with AI-generated Chinese audio, many, like those from Markiplier and xQc, only included Chinese subtitles.
Seeing how many videos were being re-uploaded from other creators, I started to think this could be a big new problem for a lot of popular online personalities like me. It feels like this is just the beginning of a trend that could really impact everyone.
This experiment is proving successful for my channel, and I believe other YouTubers and streamers will start doing something similar soon. I feel like I was one of the first to try it out.”
The latest innovation in reaching a wider audience is gaining traction on social media: YouTube star MrBeast has shared that he translates his videos into many languages. However, he uses professional voice actors to provide the translated audio.
YouTube now lets you automatically dub videos into different languages, so you can watch content in your preferred language. They’re even improving this feature with AI to make the dubbing look more natural, although accessing it might require a paid subscription.
