This year marks the 15th anniversary of World of Tanks, and the game recently received its largest update yet – version 2.0. This update introduced tier XI tanks, a brand-new map, and a cooperative PvE mode. A further update, 2.1.1, added even more tanks and gameplay features. Players have been wondering if modern tanks will ever be included, and in a recent interview with GryOnline, Wargaming’s Product Director, Artem Safronov, discussed future plans and the possibility of a World of Tanks game set in a more modern era.
Will World of Tanks ever go modern?
I recently read an interview with Artem Safronov from Wargaming, and he addressed the big question of whether we’ll ever see a World of Tanks game set in more modern times. He said they totally get why players like me are asking for it! But apparently, adding modern tanks is really complicated. More importantly, they’re worried about dividing the player base if they launch a whole separate game, so they’re hesitant to go that route.
We generally agree with the players – when we consider what the game should look like in the next 5 to 10 years, adding modern vehicles seems like the most logical step. It’s fairly obvious, really. We’re actively exploring this, but we need a smart, all-encompassing solution. Our goal is to integrate these additions seamlessly, avoiding the need for a separate game. This is challenging, though, because modern vehicles are vastly different from what’s currently in the game – especially tanks.

The conversation also covered World of Tanks: Heat, which offers a faster-paced, more action-packed experience. The developers explained that it’s a different design choice – the original World of Tanks focuses on slow, strategic gameplay, while Heat aims to reimagine what a modern war game could be. Ultimately, it comes down to player preference, similar to how some people enjoy the fast-paced action in the newer Battlefield games.
Artem Safronov is optimistic about the future of World of Tanks. Guided by the changes in version 2.0, the team is working to enhance gameplay with new features, better matchmaking, and redesigned maps. They’re also planning additions like Tier XI tanks. With a skilled team in place, they believe both the game and Wargaming have a promising future.
