Prime Video boasts several popular franchises, and among its hidden gems is a 16-part anthology series that deserves more attention. The service has created some truly outstanding TV shows across many genres, successfully attracting viewers of all ages and tastes.
Some of the most popular shows on Prime Video include The Expanse, Fleabag, The Boys, and Reacher. However, many other excellent shows haven’t gotten the attention they deserve, including Modern Love. While Modern Love has expanded into an international series, it remains one of Prime Video’s most overlooked gems.
Modern Love Is One Of Prime Video’s Most Underrated Rom-Com Shows
As a critic, I’ve been following John Carney’s Modern Love, and it’s a really interesting show. It’s based on the popular New York Times column, and what I appreciate most is that it’s not just about romantic love. Each episode feels like a little movie, telling a completely different story with a new set of characters. It tackles all kinds of love – friendships, self-acceptance, and, yes, romance – and a lot of it unfolds against the backdrop of New York City. It’s a really charming and relatable anthology series.
The show Modern Love was quickly renewed for a second season, which premiered in 2021 and continued the same storytelling style as the first. The initial season of Modern Love received generally positive feedback, with critics particularly praising the acting from its talented cast, including Cristin Milioti, Dev Patel, Anne Hathaway, and Andrew Scott.
Okay, Season 2 definitely didn’t get the best reviews – a lot of people thought it felt a bit predictable and didn’t have the same emotional impact as the first. But honestly, Modern Love is still one of my favorite rom-coms on Prime Video. What I love about it is how it shows all kinds of love – not just romantic, but family, self-love, everything! The characters feel so real, and the stories really tackle important stuff like dealing with mental health, getting older, and learning to love yourself, which is amazing.
Even though Modern Love is a well-made show, it hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves on Prime Video. Its heartwarming and gentle nature seems to get lost among the platform’s more fast-paced, dramatic series, and many viewers haven’t connected with its intimate, emotional stories.
Modern Love Spawned An International Franchise
While the original Modern Love didn’t impress many critics, it proved popular enough to inspire spin-offs around the world. India quickly produced three versions – Modern Love Mumbai (in Hindi), Modern Love Hyderabad (in Telugu), and Modern Love Chennai (in Tamil). Though all three received positive reviews, each only lasted for a single season.
In October 2022, a Japanese adaptation called Modern Love Tokyo debuted on Prime Video, but it only had one season. Later that same year, Modern Love Amsterdam, a Dutch version of the show, was released with six episodes. Critics generally liked Modern Love Amsterdam, noting its successful portrayal of Amsterdam’s diverse population.
Currently, there aren’t any new international versions of Modern Love being developed or publicly planned. However, that doesn’t mean more won’t happen in the future.
What Happened To Modern Love Season 3?
The first season of Modern Love was well-received, earning a 75% rating from critics and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which led to its renewal. However, season 2 saw a drop in both scores—64% from critics and 44% from audiences. Consequently, a third season wasn’t made, though the possibility of future installments hasn’t been completely ruled out.
Although Prime Video didn’t formally cancel Modern Love, they also didn’t order another season. This leaves the possibility of a third season open, but for now, the original Modern Love column still appears in The New York Times. The column also inspired a podcast of the same name, which launched in 2016.
Despite being a quality show, Prime Video’s Modern Love hasn’t gotten as much recognition as it should. What’s great about this series is its flexibility – you can experience the stories in various ways, including written columns, different TV shows, and even a podcast.
