Modded Borderlands 4 weapons flood eBay, but sellers say there’s little profit

It hasn’t been long since Borderlands 4 was released, but players are already modifying the game and selling those altered items – like guns and characters – on eBay.

The game’s release has been met with problems, as many players are upset about how poorly it runs on computers. This frustration grew after the CEO seemed to dismiss concerns about the game’s performance, leading some to feel the developers weren’t listening to their feedback.

Borderlands 4 features a completely new weapon customization system, allowing players to precisely adjust weapon parts and effects like never before. Unlike earlier games that relied mostly on random loot, this new system lets players build exactly the weapons they want and even share or sell their creations.

Sellers struggle to cash in on Borderlands Mods

Checking completed listings on eBay reveals a lively unofficial market for altered in-game items. Powerful weapons and gear are selling for as little as $3, up to around $10 each, and fully upgraded characters are going for between $30 and $55. However, despite these sales, sellers aren’t making a significant profit.

One modder told Eurogamer they were disappointed with sales, saying they’d only sold around three or four of their creations since launch. While this brought in about £15-£20, it didn’t even cover the cost of materials. However, the modder emphasized they weren’t motivated by profit, but by the enjoyment of creating.

One of the main issues is the initial expense of creating these items. The seller explains that making customized gear involves paying data miners for detailed information – essentially a breakdown of every component of each gun, including its rarity, brand, and level. These resources can cost anywhere from £50 to £100, meaning most sellers end up losing money on each sale.

Although some players are interested in buying powerful weapons or characters, the unofficial marketplace for Borderlands 4 doesn’t seem to be a successful venture, and it adds another layer of complexity to the game’s already troubled release.
