This year, the TV series MobLand, featuring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren, made its premiere on Paramount+. The show broke records for viewership upon its release, with 8.8 million viewers tuning in just seven days after its debut – that’s four times the number of viewers from the first day.
I can’t help but feel thrilled about the fact that my favorite series, MobLand, has done so impressively well that it’s only natural Paramount+ decided to renew it for a second season. In the meantime, fellow fans of gripping gangster productions like myself might want to explore another masterpiece from the creative mind behind it all – Ronan Bennett.
From 2011 to 2013, as well as from 2019 to 2023, he produced the TV show Top Boy, which focused on a gang of young individuals navigating life in a crime-infested corner of East London that is often overlooked. Originally, this series aired on Channel 4, but when it was canceled after two seasons, Netflix picked up the production.
The critically acclaimed series, Top Boy, has been warmly received by both critics and viewers. On Rotten Tomatoes, 97% of critics and 84% of viewers recommend it, while on Metacritic, it holds a rating of 86/100. On IMDb, the score is 8.4. Top Boy has garnered praise for its exceptional acting, engaging screenplay, emotional depth, and music. This raw and unyielding production keeps viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Its portrayal of London’s criminal underworld sets it apart from other TV series in the same genre. It’s a standout gangster TV show that spans across five seasons. Among its star-studded cast are Ashley Walters, Kano, Jasmine Jobson, and Little Simz, among others.
