‘Moana 2,’ Once Destined for Streaming, Crosses $1 Billion at Global Box Office

The animated sequel to “Moana,” initially planned for streaming, has now become a massive success at the box office, raking in over a billion dollars.

The second installment of “Moana” has earned a massive $1.009 billion worldwide after eight weeks in theaters, with $445 million coming from domestic viewers and $567 million from international audiences. This makes it Disney’s third film in 2024 to reach the billion-dollar mark, joining “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.” This impressive achievement marks a fantastic year for Disney’s film studio, as no other competitors managed a $1 billion release in 2024, though Universal came the closest with “Despicable Me 4,” which earned $969 million.

As a devoted cinephile, I was thrilled to witness the grand opening of “Moana 2” on November 28th. This stunning sequel not only broke the Thanksgiving box office record but smashed it with an astounding $225 million earnings over the five-day holiday weekend! It effortlessly surpassed the previous record set by “Frozen II” in 2019 with a mere $125 million.

Despite some mixed reviews from critics, the film garnered immense praise from moviegoers, leading to positive word-of-mouth buzz. This adoration kept “Moana 2” in the top five spots on domestic charts for an impressive seven consecutive weekends!

Now in its eighth frame, “Moana 2” managed to hold strong at No. 6 over the weekend, earning $6.1 million. Moreover, it extended its success over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, raking in another $8.4 million.

The financial success of “Moana 2” for Disney and cinema owners serves as a strong argument for theatrical releases, as the project was initially planned as a series for Disney+ but later transformed into a full-length film. Initially released in 2016, “Moana” had moderate success with $680 million worldwide, but its popularity soared on Disney+’s streaming platform, where it remains one of their most popular titles. In addition to this, Disney is working on a live-action remake set for release in 2026. Given the high box office earnings of the animated sequel, it’s likely that we will see another Moana adventure featuring our brave heroine soon as well.

In the enchanting sequel of “Moana 2,” I lent my voice yet again to the charming demigod Maui, while Auli’i Cravalho brought our heroine Moana to life. This time, our journey took us deep into the ocean in search of a mystical island and a way to lift a curse. While Lin-Manuel Miranda, who gifted us with timeless melodies like “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome” in the first film, wasn’t present this time, he gracefully handed over the songwriting reins to Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, the talented duo behind “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical.
