Moana 2 ending explained: What happens to Moana and Maui?

As a long-time fan of Disney’s captivating storytelling, I must say that Moana 2 has truly outdone itself! With its thrilling adventure, heartwarming moments, and an ending that leaves you with goosebumps, it’s safe to say that this sequel is a masterpiece.

In their quest to discover a secret isle and confront a mighty deity, Moana and Maui have much on the line during Moana 2. Fortunately, the finale of this continuation finds them making it back home safely. (Caution: spoilers included!)

Three years down the line, I find myself once more drawn to the vast expanse of the ocean, following in Moana’s footsteps as a dedicated fan. My quest, like hers, is to locate the mystical island of Motufetu. By unearthing this hidden paradise, I hope to reconnect the ocean’s people, and with the aid of my new companions and the ever-reliable Maui, I’m getting closer every day to realizing our shared dream.

On their journey, they confront deities resembling bats and indigenous tribes similar to the Kakamora, all while approaching an island shielded by the wrathful spirit called Nalo.

Indeed, did they manage to overcome Nalu, and does the enchanted Motufetu rise once more to the top? Let me share some insights on how Moana 2 concludes.

Moana ending explained: The crew heads to Motufetu

As an enthusiastic fan, I’d put it this way: With our freshly acquired boat and renewed spirit, we unite as a team and set sail for Motufetu. Our objective is to confront Nalo directly. The strategy? We aim to distract Nalo while Maui, with his enchanted hook and divine strength, lifts Motufetu from the ocean depths.

Upon their arrival, Nalo stands at the ready and poised. With the might of his sea abilities, he pursues them relentlessly with whirlwinds like hurricanes and twisters alike, all the while Maui employs his transformative powers to soar through the skies, slicing through the whirlwinds as they come.

Moana soon understands that the task at hand is challenging, and if Maui fails to retrieve the island, all their efforts will be in vain. However, she learns that Maui isn’t after the island itself; instead, he’s drawn to Moana and her crew. In response, she advises Maui to concentrate on securing the island while they try to outmaneuver Nalo by making unexpected moves.

Maui is gravely injured

For a time, they prosper, and Maui manages to retrieve Motufetu. However, disaster strikes when Nalo lashes Maui with lightning, stripping him of his demigod abilities (and tattoos). Overwhelmed, Maui releases the hook, plunging into the ocean as Moana calls out his name in distress. Concurrently, their vessel is wrecked.

In a new moment of understanding, Moana discovers that reaching the island requires an alternative route. Rather than attempting to lift the island, she plunges beneath the surface and makes her way towards it. Noticing this, Nalo swiftly discharges bolts of lightning into the waters below.

Moana makes her way towards the island, with Nalo hot on her heels in a bid to see who reaches their objective first. Luckily, Moana just beats the clock, dipping her hand into the island moments before a bolt of lightning strikes her location. The waters immediately become tranquil, and soon enough, Nalo vanishes, his abilities lessened due to the resurrection of Motufetu.

Motufetu rises again

In the water, Maui is rescued by Loto, Kele, and Moni. However, upon waking, he finds that Moana is missing. Diving deeper, he encounters her motionless body floating in the water below. The ocean surrounds them, forming a pocket of air, but Moana remains completely still.

In a melodious tune, Maui calls out, gathering his ancestors nearby. His grandmother materializes, sings to her, and mystical markings light upon Moana’s skin on her arm. All of a sudden, she stirs to consciousness. As if in response, Maui’s tattoos reappear, and the two rise from the waters together.

As I set foot on this enchanted isle, pulled from the vast ocean by the mighty hands of Maui, my heart swelled with a mix of relief and triumph. My fellow adventurers disembarked alongside me, our reunion echoing in the air like a symphony of joy. And there she was, Moana, radiantly basking in her newfound demigod status, a beacon of strength and resilience on this magical island we had all come to call home.

They discover a map on the wall depicting various islands linked by the sea. After a brief pause, they detect the sound of an approaching boat. Subsequently, additional boats appear, confirming that others had indeed inhabited these remote locations all along.

The people of the ocean return home

On Motunui Island, Moana’s younger sibling, Simea, is perched by the shoreline, anticipating her sister’s return. All of a sudden, Maui descends on the island, causing quite a commotion among the locals. Following his act of gifting Simea a token from Moana, they both gaze out over the water and spot Moana, Loto, Kele, and Moni arriving home.

Beyond them, numerous other vessels were present, as well, with the denizens of the sea gathering to be recognized. Upon Moana’s arrival on shore, she warmly greeted her loved ones.

At the finale, Moana and her team embark on another journey, this time exploring the ocean, which has taken on a fresh, mysterious quality now that the people have been reunited.
