MLB The Show 25 Cover Athlete Reveal Confirms Series First

Following some hints, the unveiling of the official MLB The Show 25 cover is here and it’s breaking new ground for the franchise. Previously, various MLB The Show editions had alternate covers and international cover athletes, but MLB The Show 25 will be unique in featuring three distinct players on a single cover. Three rising talents who are leaving their stamp on the league will jointly hold the title of an MLB The Show 25 cover athlete.

Three MLB The Show 25 Cover Athletes Revealed

Yesterday, excitement soared among fans as an Instagram post featuring Elly De La Cruz emerged, revealing himself as the cover athlete for MLB The Show 25. However, Baltimore Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson followed suit with his own Instagram video stating that he was initially intended to be on the cover. Later, Paul Skenes joined in by posting a video claiming he would be taking over the cover of MLB The Show 25, adding fuel to the confusion.

Sony San Diego has officially unveiled that MLB The Show 25 will showcase three players – Paul Skenes from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Elly De La Cruz of the Cincinnati Reds, and Gunnar Henderson from the Baltimore Orioles – on its standard edition cover. This marks a first in the MLB The Show franchise, which dates back to 1996, as they’ve never previously selected multiple athletes for the main cover art.

In the mid-2010s, various international editions of the game showcased distinct cover athletes in Canada, Korea, and Taiwan, but these weren’t combined covers. Instead, special versions of the game have highlighted figures like Jackie Robinson and Derek Jeter as alternate covers. The most similar instance might be the MLB The Show 24 Negro Leagues Edition from last year, which showcases multiple players on its cover to symbolize the numerous trailblazers from the Negro Leagues era.

In contrast to previous installments that trace their origins somewhat deeper, MLB The Show 25 marks the 20th anniversary of the MLB The Show series. This series can be traced back to MLB Pennant Race in 1996, followed by a string of successors starting with MLB 98 in 1997, ending with MLB 2006 in 2005. Today’s Sony San Diego Studio is connected through a chain of mergers and acquisitions to the original release by Sony Interactive Studios America, as well as the period of 989 Sports/989 Studios.

As a devoted gamer, I’ve got to say that MLB The Show kicked off the modern era of sports gaming, and they smartly decided to match their release year with the name. In contrast, series like Madden and NBA 2K stick with a slightly odd numbering system due to their seasons spanning from one year into the next. Exciting news for us baseball fans! MLB The Show 25 is set to drop on March 18, 2025, but if we’re lucky, Early Access could start as early as March 14. Unfortunately, there’s been no word yet on what new game modes or features we can expect from the upcoming release. Can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store for us!
