‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ Weighs Cannes Film Festival Debut

Ethan Hunt could be hitting the Croisette.

Although a final decision hasn’t been made yet, there are plans for “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” to debut at the Cannes Film Festival, potentially bringing Tom Cruise’s considerable celebrity appeal to the event. Paramount, who chose not to comment for this article, will be releasing the movie in cinemas on May 21, which coincides with the festival’s second week. This film is rumored to be Cruise’s last portrayal of the IMF agent.

Paramount has a long-standing relationship with the festival, as does Cruise, who had a successful return to Cannes in 2022 for “Top Gun: Maverick.” The film earned an impressive $1.45 billion at global box offices and received six Oscar nominations, ultimately taking home an award for best sound.

Other notable American directors are expected to debut their latest films at the glamorous festival, including Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest,” starring Denzel Washington, produced by A24 and AppleTV+; Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” featuring a stellar cast such as Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, and Benedict Cumberbatch, distributed by Focus and Universal Pictures; Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague,” a film about the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s classic movie “Breathless,” from Paris-based ARP; and Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother,” starring Adam Driver, Cate Blanchett, Mayim Bialik, Tom Waits, and Charlotte Rampling, produced by Mubi.

It’s unlikely that the “F1” movie starring Apple’s Brad Pitt will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, according to reports.

The prestigious Cannes Film Festival, carefully selected by Thierry Fremaux for many years, has been experiencing successive groundbreaking editions. The most recent event unveiled three highly anticipated films from the awards circuit, such as Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner “Anora,” Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez,” and Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance.” Nevertheless, not all commercially-oriented movies gain traction from a Cannes debut. For instance, “Top Gun” gained momentum after its festival premiere, but the upcoming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” faced a tepid response before its 2023 premiere.
