Minecraft-style game Hytale saved after devs buy canceled title back from Riot

I was so excited to hear that Hytale is back! After Riot Games cancelled it, I really thought that was the end. But now, Hypixel has taken full ownership of the game, which is amazing news! It’s a total turnaround and I can’t wait to see what they do with it.

On June 23, 2025, Riot Games stopped working on Hytale and began the process of closing Hypixel Studios. This decision came after a decade of development on the game, which was designed to be similar to Minecraft.

After hearing feedback from the community, Hypixel’s founders, Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette, offered to buy the project back. They state the agreement happened before they fully understood the project’s code, and now it’s completely independent – meaning it has no investors or publishers.

Hypixel has announced it’s brought back over 30 developers who previously worked on Hytale and pledged personal funds to support the game’s development for the next ten years, focusing on its initial goals.

Hytale lives on after Hypixel acquires game rights

Hypixel plans to release an early access version of the game in November. Players should be aware that this first version will be quite rough – expect bugs, gameplay that isn’t fully balanced, and frequent updates that could temporarily cause things to stop working as expected.

Simon Collins-Laflamme, a co-founder of Hypixel, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he and his team have successfully bought Hytale from Riot Games. He stated simply, “We did it. Hytale is saved.”

He quickly cleared things up, saying we wouldn’t have to wait any longer and that we’d be able to jump in and play the game, even if it’s a little unpolished around the edges. Basically, we’re getting our hands on it soon, warts and all!

He admitted it wouldn’t be flawless immediately, but expressed confidence that they could work together to make it something great.

The development process will focus on regular updates, clear explanations of changes, and listening to player feedback. Hypixel says they’re keeping the team small on purpose so they can quickly improve the game.

Hytale is launching into a long-term early access phase where player feedback will be a major focus. The developers at Hypixel plan to gradually build the game they’ve always envisioned, and they already have funding secured for the next ten years to make it happen.
