Mikey Madison’s Road to Potential Oscar Glory

As a seasoned film critic who’s seen more movies than I care to count, I must say, Mikey Madison’s performance in “Anora” is nothing short of extraordinary. The girl can act! She’s got that Brooklyn charm, she’s not afraid to bare all, and she delivers a performance that’s both hilarious and heart-wrenching.

Mikey Madison shines in Sean Baker’s movie “Anora” this year! As the main character Ani, she delivers an outstanding performance that is both funny and moving, with a Brooklyn accent, some revealing scenes, and lots of talent. The film premiered at Cannes, won the Palme d’Or, and ever since then, Madison has been mentioned as a strong contender for the Oscars.

Although Madison delivered an exceptional performance, she faces a challenging path if she aims for the gold. For instance, our film awards expert, Nate Jones, notes that the Best Actress Oscar has seldom gone to newcomers in recent times, as was common during the 2010s (such as Jennifer Lawrence, Brie Larson, and Emma Stone from La La Land). Additionally, Madison isn’t well-known outside of her acting roles. While some may recognize her from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the Scream series, or her role as the teenage daughter on Pamela Adlon’s Better Things, she remains relatively unknown to many. In fact, she has no public social media presence. Therefore, we’ll be closely monitoring Madison’s rise to stardom from Cannes all the way through the Oscars to witness the emergence of a potential new star.

A glossy mag profile

On August 26, 2024: Madison launches her media debut in full swing, and it becomes evident that contrary to the fiery, spirited persona portrayed in the movie, Madison is a more subdued individual. In an August 26 interview for Esquire, she admits, “I’m essentially a good girl, and I’ve always been a good girl. I’ve never transgressed rules or engaged in mischievous activities.

In 2024, Madison frequently collaborates with Baker on their YouTube videos, where significant PR victories are achieved. Their chemistry, described as sweet and awkward, is highlighted in the scene breakdown for Vanity Fair, set to release on October 17. Madison shows a keen interest in both the technical aspects and deeper analysis of filmmaking. At one point, she discusses her character’s love interest adjusting Ani’s top, stating that it represents a balance between taking liberties and providing protection, which she finds intriguing. Baker simply replies, “Hm, yeah.

Her first nomination

2024-10-29: On October 29th, I, Madison, am honored to earn my first nod in the acting world when I’m nominated for Outstanding Lead Performance at the prestigious 2024 Gotham Awards. Unlike some other award shows, the Gothams don’t categorize performances by gender, and they aren’t always accurate predictors of the Oscars – remember Charles Melton who won Best Supporting Performance last year for “May December”, only to miss out on an Oscar nomination? However, with heavyweights like Nicole Kidman (for “Babygirl”) and Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”) also nominated, it’s clear I’m walking a promising path.

Awards-column darling

November 26, 2024: In contrast to her usual reserved self, as depicted in various media outlets like the November 26 L.A. Times profile alongside Baker, Madison’s shyness takes a back seat. The focus instead shifts towards the explicit scenes of the movie. In an intriguing revelation, Madison shares how her father constructed a stripper pole at home for her to practice. In the competitive world of Hollywood, preparing for a role and undergoing a physical transformation are highly valued aspects, and we’ll see if this pays off with Golden Globe nominations slated for December 9.
