Mikey Madison Says ‘Scream’ Fans Go Up to Her and Say ‘I’m Mad at You’ for Killing David Arquette’s Dewey: ‘I’m So Sorry. I Didn’t Write the Script’

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a penchant for unraveling the nuances of character arcs and the intricacies of storytelling, I must confess that Mikey Madison‘s journey in the world of horror has been nothing short of fascinating. Her admission of being blissfully unaware of the fervor surrounding the “Scream” franchise before joining its ranks is a testament to her authenticity as an artist.

Mikey Madison, who plays Anora’s “Scream” character Amber Freeman, admitted to Collider that she was taken aback by the intense response from fans upon learning her character was Ghostface and responsible for Dewey’s death in 2022’s “Scream.” Unbeknownst to Madison at the time, the “Scream” series had a dedicated and fervent fanbase.

During the filming, I must admit, I was unaware of how massive the fan base for that franchise is – a fact I’ve only come to understand since then. Fans of Scream, horror enthusiasts, and movie buffs are truly remarkable individuals, but I walked into it rather innocently.

She mentioned feeling a bit melancholic as she said, ‘What a fantastic character, I’ll miss him.’ Later on, she acknowledged the deep sorrow that many others shared. People have approached her, saying things like, ‘I dislike this turn of events. I’m angry at you.’ To which she replied, ‘I apologize, but I didn’t write the script! I didn’t want it to happen.’

Initially, when she learned her character was supposed to be the film’s Ghostface, she found the idea thrilling and enthusiastically expressed, “That sounds fantastic! I would definitely be up for it. I’m particularly drawn to this Ghostface role because it offers such an intriguing, enjoyable twist and presents a wildly unexpected journey for a character, which makes it all the more appealing.

At the moment, Madison is considered a strong contender to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, thanks to her exceptional performance in Sean Baker’s film “Anora.” This movie was awarded the Palme d’Or at Cannes earlier this year. In September, Baker revealed to EbMaster that it was Madison’s acting in both “Scream” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” that persuaded him she would be ideal for the role of “Anora.

Baker mentioned that he was seated beside his wife and producer, Samantha Quan, at the theater during the 2022 ‘Scream’ reboot screening. He then expressed to her, ‘Once we step out of here, I’ll immediately contact Mikey’s representatives.’ This observation of the two characters made him realize that she had the potential to bring everything he required for his upcoming project, ‘Anora’,” is a possible paraphrase of the given sentence.
