Mike Tyson-Jake Paul Fight Commentator Rosie Perez Can’t Predict Winner, But Says, ‘I’m More Concerned for Tyson Because of His Age’

As a film enthusiast with over three decades of passion for both cinema and boxing, I find myself utterly captivated by the upcoming Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul match. My journey with boxing has been a secretive one, hidden beneath layers of societal misconceptions that deem it too brutal or barbaric. However, my love for the sport has only grown stronger over the years, culminating in this monumental event.

For decades, Rosie Perez harbored her deep affection for boxing, as some considered the sport too brutal. Yet, her passion remained hidden until recently when she started sharing her insights on Twitter during fights.

Moving on to the present day, Perez, affectionately known as “Boxing’s First Lady,” serves as an official commentator for the highly anticipated fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul this Friday evening in Dallas. The event will be broadcast live on Netflix.

Perez shared with me on Thursday that the upcoming contest promises to be quite intriguing. Jake Paul is in his late twenties, while Mike Tyson is 58 years old – a difference of three decades, which is truly remarkable!

Initially, much like others, I wasn’t too fond of Paul when he started his boxing career. “Initially, even I joined the chorus of critics,” I admitted. “The criticism wasn’t born out of malice, but rather worry. Boxing is a genuine sport, it’s not a game you play. It’s dangerous, with the potential for injuries or even fatalities in the ring. That’s why I had reservations about him. But he proved me wrong, he persevered, he kept going and going.

Perez isn’t betting on who will win since she thinks it’s anyone’s game, as she puts it, “Everyone seems to be saying it’s 50-50 this time around.” Earlier predictions favored Jake Paul due to his youth and knockout power. However, she points out that not all of his opponents were like Mike Tyson.

This following Q&A has been edited for length and clarity.

How worried are you about Mike or Jake getting seriously injured?

At every boxing match, I can’t help but feel a constant apprehension, as one well-placed punch could dramatically shift the course of the fight. It’s indeed unpredictable; someone could be knocked out suddenly. My worry isn’t just for Tyson, but also for Jake Paul, yet my primary concern is for Tyson due to his advanced age.

What are some of your favorite boxing movies?

The film ‘The Harder They Fall’ featuring Humphrey Bogart left a profound impact on me as it was the initial boxing movie I watched that delved into the gritty realities and business aspects of the sport. It struck a chord because I wasn’t aware of its darker side back then, especially the exploitation by organized crime. The first ‘Rocky’ film stands out, with ‘Raging Bull’ being a standout among the best. Robert De Niro’s portrayal of the character and his insight into the world of boxing was astounding. The cinematography and direction by Martin Scorsese were remarkable. Even though I knew the eventual outcome because I was familiar with the fight, I found myself on the edge of my seat throughout.

Does it surprise or influence you in any way that Jake Paul backs Donald Trump? Or do you believe that sports and politics should remain separate entities?

At boxing events, I avoid discussing politics. It’s noteworthy that Donald Trump has attended UFC bouts and some boxing matches; he even had a connection with boxing before his involvement in the downfall of Atlantic City. However, I dislike acknowledging his achievements. Trump’s strategy to involve himself in sports is brilliant, as it’s all about unity—a tribal mentality. Consider this: We have various ethnicities attending these events. Despite supporting opposing teams, we’re united by our shared purpose. This access to the American populace is immense.

Given your preference for keeping sports and politics separate, I still feel compelled to inquire about your emotions following the recent elections. How are you doing?

Many Democrats were disheartened, asking me why I wasn’t feeling the same. I explained that while I was concerned for the country, I wasn’t devastated. From the beginning, I warned the campaign that it would be about the economy, and unfortunately, that prediction came true. It’s tough to accept, but we must take our medicine, get back up, and keep fighting. Some people seemed to be having a pity party, but I reminded them that we’ve faced losses before. We should cry for a night, then move on. I’m the first person you’re hearing this from because others didn’t want me to share this message. I’ve come from poverty and have faced rejections due to my race and nationality, so I don’t let others bring me down. In reality, I may be more moderate than people think because I live in the real world. There are many non-Trump supporting Republicans out there whom we should try to understand and listen to instead of criticizing them.

Just as you mentioned, Trump is a fighter. Would you greet him if he attended the Tyson-Paul boxing match?

I wouldn’t treat him disrespectfully since he’s soon to be our president. I wouldn’t want to give him any reason to feel disrespected, but I’m unsure if I could extend a genuine handshake towards him. However, it seems boxing and politics shouldn’t go together. I believe he may attend the event, as it would certainly be a shrewd move on his part.
