Mike Flanagan Breaks His No Remakes & Sequels Rule For Carrie

I’m so excited! Mike Flanagan, one of my favorite directors, is tackling Carrie as a limited series. What’s really interesting is that he usually avoids remakes and sequels, but he’s decided to revisit this classic Stephen King story over fifty years after the original novel came out. I can’t wait to see his unique spin on it!

Mike Flanagan, known for creating original horror series, is breaking his own rule by making a limited series based on Stephen King’s Carrie. He generally avoids retelling stories, but he decided to make an exception for this classic, which has already been adapted into several movies and a stage play since it was first published in 1974.

Mike Flanagan recently told Empire Magazine why he’s interested in making a Carrie TV series, despite the story being adapted for the screen many times before. He believes he’s found a fresh way to tell the story, offering a new and contemporary perspective.

A new way presented itself, something that felt very timely and new.

Flanagan has deviated from his usual practice before when adapting Stephen King’s work. He previously adapted Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining, in 2019. He felt compelled to tell the full story because he viewed the original film as focusing on addiction, and Doctor Sleep as its counterpart, dealing with recovery.

He explained that Doctor Sleep was the film that shifted his perspective. The director shared that working on it showed him you can build something original even when starting with existing material. He confessed it completely changed his previous opinions about sequels and remakes.

I’ve always loved tackling original ideas and finding fresh approaches. I used to be firm about not revisiting old stories, but the success of ‘Doctor Sleep’ definitely challenged that rule!

The idea was too good to pass up. ‘The Shining’ explores the depths of alcoholism, and Steve’s new story focuses on the journey to recovery. It felt like we were finishing what we started, showing the other side of the same issue and completing the narrative.

The new Carrie series follows a shy and awkward teenage girl and her strict, deeply religious mother. After constant bullying, the girl discovers and starts using her ability to move things with her mind.

Summer Howell will play the lead role of Carrie in the upcoming series. The cast also includes Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle, Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, and Joel Oulette as Tommy.

There is currently no official release date for Carrie at the time of this article’s publication.
