The game development company known as Midnight Society, which parted ways with the controversial streamer Dr. Disrespect in June 2024 following accusations of sending inappropriate messages to a minor, has now announced its closure. Over the past three years, the studio had been developing Deadrop, a first-person shooter game.
Midnight Society, the studio developing FPS Deadrop for three years, is shutting down
Today, the studio made public through social media channels that it will be shutting down its operations. The statement also highlighted the 55 developers who worked there and expressed that Midnight Society is currently reaching out to other game studios in search of potential employment opportunities for our skilled team members. This studio, which ceased to exist, was established in 2021 by Beahm, along with gaming veterans such as Robert Bowling, a former strategic creator for Call of Duty, and Quinn Delhoyo, the designer behind Halo 5’s multiplayer mode.
Deadrop, the free-to-play FPS being developed by Midnight Society, was showcased to the community in various demos. According to Midnight Society’s website, it is characterized as a “vertical extraction shooter set in a grim and violent future where the 1980s persist…
The game was designed to feature approximately 10,000 distinct, procedurally generated “VisorCortexes” that would be exclusive to each player who purchases an Access Pass. These could be traded among players. On Deadrop’s FAQ page, they explain that whether or not Deadrop is a blockchain game is a topic for a detailed debate.
When the studio shut down and development on the game ceased, some fans reacted to Midnight Society’s notice about refunds since they had bought into the game early with the understanding they would receive the full version at a later date. It remains uncertain what options these players have now.
In September, Midnight Society communicated to PCGamer that they encountered several unforeseen difficulties after parting ways with Dr. Disrespect, leading to job cuts. Regrettably, these layoffs didn’t manage to steer the studio back on course.
