It’s surprisingly common for small, annoying bugs to be the trickiest to fix. This can be due to how much time and effort developers prioritize, the hidden complexity of what seem like simple problems, and the difficulty of consistently recreating the bug. While challenging in video games, fixing bugs in operating systems is even harder. Although some people dislike Windows, it remains the most widely used PC operating system, relied upon by hundreds of millions daily. Microsoft regularly releases updates to keep Windows secure and current, and these often require a restart. For around a decade, however, there was a frustrating bug: choosing the “update and shut down” option didn’t actually turn the computer off – it just restarted it to the login screen. Thankfully, Microsoft has now finally fixed this long-standing issue.
Update and shut down fixed on Windows 11
Maintaining a modern, secure, and fully functional operating system is challenging. While Microsoft is pushing forward with AI features in Windows 11, and even envisioning a future beyond traditional mouse and keyboard input, it’s easy to overlook existing issues. A recent update, Windows version 25H2, addresses one such problem: the operating system was previously ignoring the “update and shut down” command, instead restarting to the login screen. This frustrating bug has now been fixed.
Microsoft has fixed a common bug in Windows 11 where the “update and shut down” option wasn’t working correctly. Many users likely didn’t notice the issue, assuming they’d chosen “update and restart,” but it could be frustrating, especially for laptop users. Some laptops continued running after being set to update and shut down overnight. While the specific cause of the bug hasn’t been revealed, Microsoft has now addressed it.
Windows updates can be annoying for many users, so any improvement to their reliability is a welcome change. However, Microsoft still has a lot of work to do to perfect its operating system. It remains to be seen whether advancements in artificial intelligence will lead to further improvements.
