„Microsoft continuously shoves this cloud thing down our throats.” Word’s new file saving method has been badly received

Microsoft Word has automatically saved documents for a while now, but users originally had to enable this feature. Microsoft is now planning to turn autosave on by default, as shown in a recent OneDrive update presentation. They discovered that pushing users towards cloud storage without their preference wasn’t successful, despite assurances about data security.

Windows users don’t want Word documents in OneDrive

So, Microsoft announced a bunch of changes coming to Word during their presentation, or at least that’s how I understood it. Right now though, it looks like only people in the Windows Insider program get to try them out, according to their blog.

I’m really excited about this! Microsoft just announced that if you’re using the Insider version of Word on Windows, any new document you create will automatically save to OneDrive. Plus, autosave is turned on, which is a huge relief – I won’t have to worry about losing my work! And the best part? It makes collaborating with others super easy because it’s all happening in real-time.

  1. New files are saved directly to OneDrive;
  2. Autosave is enabled from the start;
  3. Your work is instantly protected and ready to share and collaborate on with others in real-time.

Users on the r/technology subreddit criticized the idea, with many expressing frustration that they don’t want to use OneDrive alongside Microsoft’s increasingly complicated and user-unfriendly app updates.

It’s frustrating how Microsoft keeps changing things. With programs like Windows, Outlook, and Teams, they seem to be adding unnecessary features and hiding the options I actually need, which were previously easy to find and use.

I’m really frustrated with Microsoft constantly pushing their cloud services on us. I’ve disliked Microsoft Office ever since they started prioritizing this. It’s become a hassle just to attach files to emails – I can’t simply drag and drop unless I do it perfectly, otherwise it automatically uploads to OneDrive and inserts a link instead.

Having storage on your computer is meant for saving files directly on the device, and I prefer to do that instead of relying on the cloud. This push towards cloud storage is really frustrating.

Okay, so if you’re like me and prefer to keep your game saves and files right on your computer instead of relying on the cloud, Microsoft isn’t forcing that on us. You can still turn off autosave to cloud storage whenever you want, which is a relief! I’ve seen a lot of people talking about why they made autosave to the cloud the default, and honestly, it makes sense. Apparently, Microsoft noticed a lot of players weren’t paying attention to *where* they were saving things, and then they’d lose files because of crashes or just couldn’t find them, and then get upset with Microsoft. It’s like they’re trying to prevent that whole mess. Plus, they even released a computer last year that runs Windows completely in the cloud – pretty wild!
