2024 saw Microsoft‘s Age of Empires team preliminarily announce additional content for Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition. However, due to the timing of the announcement being too early, the studio has decided to cancel the expansion.
According to a post on PC Gamer’s blog, the developer announced they have decided to scrap the planned DLC following thorough deliberation. They wanted to reassure fans that this was not a hasty or careless choice.
Initially, Microsoft admitted they made an error by announcing the DLC (Downloadable Content) before it had even been created. Upon reflection, the team acknowledged that the announcement was made too soon.
The developer acknowledged that releasing the recent update might have been a significant letdown for some, given the anticipation for additional content. However, they managed to issue a game patch at the close of last year, even though it didn’t meet the scale and expectations you all had.
The developers behind Age of Empires announced that, despite not releasing the promised expansion pack, they will maintain the game’s servers active and offer ongoing customer service. They additionally directed fans towards the official mod section for Age of Empires 3, suggesting new content for players to explore.
Initially scheduled for release in 2024, the DLC was postponed indefinitely before it was eventually scrapped. The specifics of its content remained undisclosed throughout.
2022 saw the launch of the latest expansion for Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition, titled Knights of the Mediterranean. However, it’s important to note that this edition is not the most recent one. In fact, Microsoft introduced Age of Empires IV in 2021 and Age of Mythology: Retold in 2024.
