Michelle Yeoh is known for taking on many roles in a single project, and her upcoming short film, Sandiwara (Sean Baker’s first film since his Oscar-winning Anora), is no exception. The trailer released today showcases Yeoh playing five different characters set in a restaurant: a critic, a hawker, a waitress, a vlogger, and a singer. This multiple-role performance is reminiscent of her acclaimed work in Everything Everywhere All at Once. In Sandiwara, we see Yeoh interacting with herself as different characters—the waitress serving food from the hawker, while a particularly irritating vlogger enjoys a meal. Each role features a completely different look for Yeoh, with the vlogger’s bright pink hair and the singer’s glamorous style being standout favorites.
Baker created a short film called Sandiwara, set in Penang, Malaysia, through Self-Portrait’s Residency program. Both Baker and Self-Portrait’s founder, Hon Chang, are from Malaysia, like Michelle Yeoh. The film will debut at the Berlinale film festival on February 13th, and will be available to stream everywhere on February 20th – meaning we’ll be able to watch the whole thing at once.
