Michele and Rob Reiner cause of death revealed by medical examiner

Following the recent passing of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has released details about how they died.

Los Angeles police found a couple dead at their home on South Chadbourne Avenue on Sunday, December 14th. The deaths appear to be a homicide.

Shortly after, Nick Reiner, the son of Michele and Rob, was arrested. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday, December 16th, that he’s been charged with two counts of murder.

With the news spreading, people are sharing heartfelt memories of Michele, age 68, and her husband Rob, 78, the acclaimed director behind beloved films like This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men.

Rob Reiner cause of death

After a preliminary investigation, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that Rob and Michele Singer Reiner both died from multiple stab wounds, and their deaths were ruled homicides.

Authorities have confirmed the date of death as December 14, 2025, ending previous uncertainty. This comes as Nick Reiner is being charged with multiple crimes, including two counts of murder and the use of a deadly weapon – specifically, a knife – during the commission of those crimes.

Romy Reiner found her parents deceased at their home on Sunday. According to a family source who spoke with the New York Times, a massage therapist first tried to reach the couple for an appointment that same day but was unable to get inside, which prompted the initial concern.

Romy was then called and arrived with a friend. They found Nick’s father deceased at the property. Several people mentioned that the night before, Nick had been at a party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien with his parents.

Nick has often talked about his past battles with addiction, and he even drew on those experiences when writing the script for his 2015 film, Being Charlie, which Rob directed.

People at the party said Rob and Nick had a disagreement. However, a source from the New York Times believes the situation might not have been as serious as it seemed, and Romy didn’t immediately think anything was wrong with her brother.

Nick Reiner seen in “suicide prevention vest”

Nick Reiner appeared in court on Wednesday, December 17th. According to the BBC, he seemed to be in restraints and wearing a vest designed to prevent self-harm.

So, I was reading about these things PSP Corp makes, and apparently they’re basically like sleeveless gowns designed to help people in crisis. They don’t have a collar, and you can adjust the openings at the shoulders and front with Velcro-like fasteners. It’s designed to be a safe alternative to things people might use to harm themselves.

The garment is too bulky to be used to create a noose. It’s warm and comfortable, and doesn’t restrict movement.

Nick didn’t enter a plea at his court hearing, allowing his legal team more time to examine the evidence. His attorney, Alan Jackson, stated that the original hearing date was postponed because Nick wasn’t healthy enough to attend.

Jackson acknowledged the situation involved difficult and important problems and urged people to avoid making quick conclusions.

Nick didn’t enter a plea in court and is scheduled to return on January 7, 2026, for another hearing where he will be asked to do so. It’s currently unknown if he’ll enter a plea before that date.

If Reiner enters a plea of not guilty, the case will proceed to trial. He will continue to be held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles until his next court date.

If found guilty, Reiner could be sentenced to life in prison with no chance of release, or potentially face the death penalty. Prosecutors haven’t decided yet if they will pursue the death penalty.

So, I was reading about Rob Reiner and Michele Singer – they actually met while filming ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ which is awesome! They ended up getting married in ’89 and had three kids – Jake, Romy, and Nick. Pretty cool story, right?

Rob is survived by his adopted daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his marriage to actress Penny Marshall. So far, none of Rob’s children have publicly commented on the recent arrest involving Nick.

In a statement, Jake, 34, and Romy, 28, shared their profound sadness, saying they are heartbroken and struggling with immense pain.

Losing our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, was a deeply painful experience, and something no one should have to go through. They were more than just parents to us—they were our closest friends.

Man, I’m still reeling from this. I come from an amazing family, and honestly, I’m just completely shocked by everything that’s happening. I don’t even know what to say right now.
