A sketch of a foot by Michelangelo recently sold for $27 million at auction, making it one of the most expensive drawings ever sold by the Renaissance artist.
Experts think this drawing was a practice sketch made while planning the paintings on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
Christie’s auction house announced that a recently found artwork has been confirmed as a work by Michelangelo after thorough investigation. It sold for $27.2 million – almost twenty times the initial estimated value.
Newly discovered Sistine Chapel study sets artist record
Before Christie’s reassessed it, the drawing wasn’t known to be a genuine work by Michelangelo. Its sale established a new auction high for the artist, driven by how scarce confirmed Michelangelo drawings are and the strong competition among bidders.

The auction house pointed out that nearly all of Michelangelo’s remaining drawings are owned by museums, making it very rare for private individuals to be able to buy them.
I still can’t believe how much money some modern art sells for! Remember that banana duct-taped to a wall that everyone was talking about? Well, the same artist actually sold a solid gold toilet – a 200-pound gold toilet – for $12 million back in 2025. It’s just wild!
