Michael Shannon Defends Man of Steel, Explains Zod’s Death Scene

Michael Shannon recently discussed the controversial death of his character, General Zod, in the movie Man of Steel. While revisiting his previous work for Vanity Fair, Shannon explained that he supports director Zack Snyder’s decision to have Superman kill Zod, and he’s proud to have been involved in the 2013 superhero film.

Michael Shannon says he’s ‘proud’ of Man of Steel

Michael Shannon recently discussed his time filming Man of Steel. In an interview with Vanity Fair, as part of their ‘Scene Selection’ series, the actor talked about his memorable roles, specifically the impactful scene where Superman kills Zod to protect others.

After reviewing the final scene, Shannon discussed the dramatic conclusion. He understood why some people disagreed with Superman’s choice to kill, but pointed out that the director, Zack Snyder, intentionally created a difficult situation for the character.

You know, one of the biggest debates around this movie, and Zack really pushed for it, was whether Superman should ever kill. So, I played a character where the only way he could save a group of people meant… well, he had to kill me. He did, and it caused a huge uproar, a lot of arguing and drama, honestly!

Look, I get the criticism leveled at this film, but after speaking with Shannon, I came away with a completely different impression. He genuinely loved working with Zack Snyder and felt proud of what they created together. He addressed the whispers about it being a cash grab head-on, insisting it wasn’t and that, in fact, the movie has real substance and meaning. He clearly believes in the project, and that conviction is something I respect.

It’s been over ten years since the release of Man of Steel when Shannon shared these thoughts. He recently played Zod again in the 2023 film, The Flash.
