Michael Fassbender Is a Killer in Crisis (Again)

As a seasoned moviegoer who’s seen more spy thrillers than I can count, I’m beyond excited for Steven Soderbergh’s latest masterpiece, “Black Bag”. Having grown accustomed to the usual tropes of this genre, I must admit that I was initially skeptical when I heard about yet another film featuring an assassin at a crossroads (been there, done that, got the t-shirt). But then they dropped Michael Fassbender, Pierce Brosnan, and Cate Blanchett into the mix, and my curiosity was piqued.

It’s time for another foray into the heart-pounding world of international espionage and domestic discord in the new trailer for Mr. and Mrs. Smith I mean True Lies I mean director Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag. Okay, it’s not the most novel territory for a spy thriller. We’ve seen Michael Fassbender play an assassin at a crossroads before, and we’ve seen Pierce Brosnan as a suave intelligence agent a number of times, and we’ve definitely seen Cate Blanchett rock a brunette wig full of deception and Machiavellian ambition. But have we seen all these ingredients mixed at once? The movies are back, baby!

Undercover in movie theaters starting March 14 (two months following the release of another film by director Steven Soderbergh, titled Presence), the film Black Bag sees Michael Fassbender portray George Woodhouse, a spy grappling with a loyalty dilemma when his wife Kathryn (played by Cate Blanchett) is accused of orchestrating a terrorist act that could claim thousands of lives. Joining the cast are Regé-Jean Page, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, and Tom Burke. David Koepp, who penned the script for Soderbergh’s 2022 thriller featuring Zoë Kravitz, titled Kimi, is responsible for writing this screenplay.

From the preview, it appears that there will likely be numerous car blasts, gun shots captured up close, and puzzling moral dilemmas concerning the elusive concept of reliability. One thing the trailer fails to guarantee is the appearance of the titular black bag! Blanchett’s purse in the initial scene seems more like a shade of gray or beige, and I have my doubts about her trustworthiness!
