The 1990 movie based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics is still a beloved version of the story, but there have been many other versions of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael’s fights against Shredder and other mutants. The 2014 CGI film, produced by Michael Bay and starring Megan Fox as April O’Neil, was particularly controversial. Despite mixed opinions, it became the highest-grossing movie in the franchise and is now climbing back into the top 10, proving the Turtles’ enduring popularity.
The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie delivered the action and famous actors you’d expect from a Michael Bay production. The cast included Will Arnett, Whoopi Goldberg, William Fichtner, Johnny Knoxville, and Tony Shalhoub – before he starred in the Reacher series on Prime Video. This film reimagined the Turtles’ origin story, showing how they first met April O’Neil and battled the villainous Shredder and his Foot Clan.
The movie relied heavily on flashy explosions and visuals, much like a Michael Bay film, but critics weren’t impressed. Many found it style over substance, describing it as a lengthy music video or simply an extended commercial. This led to a very low 20% rating on the Tomatometer. However, audiences were slightly more forgiving, giving it a 50% score, likely due to nostalgia and the fact that it had been twenty years since a live-action Ninja Turtles movie was released. They were willing to overlook the film’s flaws.
Now that it’s available on Netflix, more people are realizing this show was a hidden gem within a popular 40-year-old franchise that still has a dedicated fanbase.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Have Found New Success

Paramount Pictures
Beyond regular showings of 1990s Ninja Turtles films around their anniversaries and the 2014 movie becoming available on Netflix, the franchise has experienced a recent revival with Seth Rogen’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
The latest animated movie breathed new life into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Created with a unique style and coming from a lifelong fan, Seth Rogen, it successfully delivered a satisfying conclusion – something the previous films struggled with. Critics and audiences loved it, giving it scores of 95% and 90% respectively, and it earned $180.5 million worldwide on a $70 million budget. Though it didn’t reach the same blockbuster numbers as earlier films, it performed well enough to warrant both a spin-off series and a sequel. The follow-up, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, continued the story in a way that was perfect for younger viewers and received a perfect 100% score from critics.
With fans eagerly awaiting Mutant Mayhem 2, many are revisiting the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. The follow-up film, Out of the Shadows, which introduced characters like Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady, is also currently available for streaming on both Netflix and Paramount+.
