Michael B. Jordan may soon be taking his talents to South Beach.
As the release of his acclaimed film Sinners nears its Oscar night reveal – where he’ll learn if he’s won his first Best Actor Academy Award – Jordan is also responding to speculation that he’s been cast in a remake of the classic TV series Miami Vice.
When asked at a pre-Oscars event about his involvement in a potential Miami Vice project (according to Variety), Michael B. Jordan smiled and gave a straightforward answer. He said, “Who wouldn’t want to be in Miami? It’s a nice place, and it seems like a great project.”
It’s definitely not official yet. Last October, rumors began circulating that Austin Butler was being considered to star as Sonny Crockett in a potential new Miami Vice movie. The film was expected to be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who directed Top Gun: Maverick, with a script written by Eric Warden Singer and Dan Gilroy. Actor Glen Powell was also previously mentioned as a possible candidate for the role.
Michael B. Jordan is likely to play Rico Tubbs, a character first made famous by Philip Michael Thomas in the original Miami Vice television series, and later portrayed by Jamie Foxx in the 2006 film. Don Johnson originally played Sonny Crockett, with Colin Farrell taking on the role in the movie adaptation.
A new movie based on Miami Vice is planned to start filming in 2026. It’s expected to closely follow the story of the original TV show’s very first episode, and is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on August 6, 2027.
Initially planned as “MTV Cops,” Miami Vice quickly became a hit after it first aired in September 1984. The show made its main actors famous and also gave early career boosts to guest stars like Bruce Willis, Julia Roberts, Stanley Tucci, Ben Stiller, and Chris Rock.
In 2025, ScreenRant included the show on its list of the 10 best neo-noir TV series. They highlighted that Miami Vice stood out from other 1980s police shows not just in its style, but also because its main characters were complicated and morally ambiguous, often becoming entangled in the criminal world they were trying to solve.
The critic explained that this show essentially created the formula for all modern noir television, and it’s still considered one of the best in the genre.
Michael Mann, one of the creators of the original TV series, tried to revive his famous crime drama with a 2006 movie. However, the film didn’t perform well at the box office, earning only $163 million globally despite costing between $135 and $150 million to make.
Michael B. Jordan being connected to the upcoming Miami Vice reboot is already generating buzz, and an Oscar win for Best Actor this Sunday would significantly boost his profile and the show’s anticipation.
