Mewgenics earns back entire 7 year development budget just 3 hours after launch

After being in development for fourteen years, the indie game Mewgenics was finally released and quickly became a huge commercial success.

Mewgenics quickly gained popularity after its release on Steam, but it had already built a dedicated following even before launch. Originally announced in 2012 as the next game from the creators of Super Meat Boy, the project faced numerous setbacks and changes over the years, becoming a well-known example of a troubled development process. It wasn’t until 2018 that Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel brought it back to life.

The game’s release date was officially set for February 10, 2026, during the PC Gaming Show, building excitement among fans who had been waiting a long time. Instead of taking preorders, Mewgenics, priced at $29.99, encouraged players to add it to their wishlists, which quickly translated into strong demand on launch day.

Mewgenics finally launches and the numbers hit fast

Mewgenics quickly became a hit when it launched on Steam around 5pm UTC, immediately rising to the top of the global best-seller list. It surpassed popular games like Counter-Strike 2 and Helldivers 2 in just a few hours.

Glaiel announced on X (formerly Twitter) that they recouped their development costs within three hours, expressing gratitude to their supporters.

and we have made back our development budget after 3 hours. Thank you all 🙂

Initial reviews have given the game a Metascore of around 90, making it the highest-rated release of 2026 to date. Critics say it’s as good as anything the creator has done before, like The Binding of Isaac. They especially liked the complex breeding system for cats, the unexpected strategies that develop as you play, and how incredibly large the game is – many believe players could easily spend hundreds of hours enjoying it.

The game quickly became popular, with over 60,000 people playing it simultaneously on Steam within eight hours of its release.

The completion of the game was particularly meaningful for McMillen. He recently shared that the initial cancellation was deeply discouraging, but finally finishing it felt like proving everyone wrong. He estimates that most players will spend over 200 hours completing the game and mentioned they’ll start discussing potential downloadable content once they’ve had time to gather player feedback.
